A group of friends discuss movies that have reached their 30th anniversary this year.
This week we’re cracking open Congo (1995), the jungle romp where killer gorillas guard diamonds and a gorilla named Amy talks with a Nintendo Power Glove. Laura Linney’s armed, Dylan Walsh brought juice boxes for a primate, and Ernie Hudson is the only one who knows what movie he’s in. It’s corporate espionage meets theme park ride—and we’re digging through the chaos to see why this ’90s relic is still echoing through our brains like “Ugly gorilla! Go away!”

Want the lyrics to our Congo song?
[Verse 1]
We took a trip to Congo, thought it’d be a breeze
Diamonds in a lost city, easy cash and a jungle tease
But then a scream through the satellite feed
For Bruce Campbell a quick cameo
Killed by the vicious pale ape – oh no!
[Verse 2]
Amy’s a talking gorilla in the mist
Joe Don Baker’s really pissed
Tim Curry sounds like he’s from Moscow
Winston Zeddemore is British now
There are hidden dangers they’ve all missed.
[Chorus]
I can’t say… I can’t say…
I can’t say… where I’m-a-gonna stay
When the gray apes slay
[Verse 3]
From plane crash landings to high-tech guns
To diamond-fueled vapor beams hotter than the sun
Jimmy Buffett flew the jet,
Peter’s eyes are getting wet
Amy met a hunky silverback and to the jungle they will run.
[Bridge]
“Where’s Homolka?”
“Getting chewed.”
“Is that a diamond?”
“Not anymore, dude.”
“Volcano’s bubbling!”
“I smell cooked ape!”
“Let’s go, let’s go—before we all get vaped!”
[Chorus]
I can’t say… I can’t say…
I can’t say… where I’m-a-gonna stay
When the gray apes slay
The ground quakes, the lava flows, (doo-doo-doo-doo-doot!)
Yeah, the volcano’s gonna blow!
It’s CONGO!
This week we’re diving into Outbreak (1995), the viral thriller that turned sneezing into a death sentence. Dustin Hoffman’s a scrappy Army virologist, Rene Russo’s his ex with better instincts, and Morgan Freeman’s somewhere between helpful and horrifying. From monkey smugglers to military cover-ups, we’re breaking quarantine to figure out how this ‘90s pandemic panic still infects our brains today.

Want the lyrics to our Outbreak song?
[Verse 1]
At first, we felt a chill, just a cough, a little sweat
Then came the news from overseas—it ain’t over yet
From the jungle to the airwaves, it flew fast and flew unseen
One scratch from Betsy, now this town’s a quarantine
[Verse 2]
We wore our masks, we sealed our suits
Still the sirens howled, the threat was absolute
They said “Control the panic,” but we knew it wasn’t true
When your generals are hiding truths, what’s a virologist to do?
[Chorus]
We won’t die, not today
Though McClintock’s bombs are coming, we still found another way
We tracked that monkey through the trees, we hit the skies, we found a cure
Now this town will stand, and science will endure
[Verse 3]
Jimbo touched that monkey, which grayed out his anatomy
You can call him McDreamy, but his guts turned creamy
Made out with his girlfriend and his luck ran dry
First on the slab, and the first to die
[Bridge]
And Robby held on strong, though her hands began to shake
Her life on the line, with every move she’d make
But with serum in the needle and a second left to spare
She took the cure and breathed again, fresh hope in the air
[Chorus]
We won’t die, no, not this time
Though fear spread fast and high command tried to cross the line
They said “nuke it from orbit,” we said “That’s insane!”
So we flew between the bombs and saved the town from flame
Cedar Creek still breathes…
And we—we won’t die
Buckle up, weirdos—this week we’re cruising into the irradiated heart of 1984’s Repo Man, a punk-fueled odyssey of car repossession, government conspiracies, alien corpses, and existential dread… all wrapped in a glowing Chevy Malibu. Emilio Estevez is the disaffected punk turned repo apprentice, Harry Dean Stanton is his nihilist mentor with a code, and the whole thing spirals into a cosmic joke with radioactive punchlines. From generic food labels to lobotomized suburbanites, we’re digging into Alex Cox’s cult classic to figure out what the hell’s actually in the trunk—and why it still hits 40 years later.

Want the lyrics to our Repo Man song?
[Verse 1]
Desert highway, sunlight’s dim
Open the trunk—goodbye skin
Boots on pavement, nothing left
He popped the lid and it took his breath
[Verse 2]
Otto's broke, dumped, and dazed
Shredded dreams in Reagan’s haze
Repo life? It gets intense
Make some money, it all makes cents
[Chorus]
Hermanos Rodriguez do not approve of drugs.
“Neither do I, but it's my birthday,” she shrugs.
There are E.T.s in the back
Don’t look inside unless you wanna get zapped
You’ll get a radioactive tan
And you gotta steer clear of the Repo Man.
[Verse 3]
Parnell got himself lobotomied
Metal hand gal tracks the Chevy with speed
Lite don’t mess when he’s firing blanks
Bud’s got just enough gas left in the tank.
[Bridge]
Is it little green men or a neutron bomb
The TV preacher duped your dad and your mom
The American Dream is mostly dead and gone
[Chorus]
Hermanos Rodriguez do not approve of drugs.
“Neither do I, but it's my birthday,” she shrugs.
There are aliens in the back
Don’t look inside unless you wanna get zapped
You’ll get a radioactive tan
And you gotta steer clear of the Repo Man.
Strap in, slap on your tinfoil hat, and squint through the splinters of time, because we’re unraveling the brain-bending, plague-drenched, chrono-chaotic fever dream that is 12 Monkeys (1995). This ain't your grandma’s time travel movie—unless she’s into post-apocalyptic underground bunkers and Cassandra complexes.
Bruce Willis stumbles through time with a head full of nightmares, Madeleine Stowe plays psychiatrist turned fugitive, and Brad Pitt delivers a twitchy, anarchic tour de force. There’s a virus, some very persistent "monkeys," and a whole lot of mental whiplash. So hop in the time chair and join us—because in 12 Monkeys, reality is optional and the future’s already infected.

Grab the dice and watch out for monkeys, because we’re diving headfirst into the stampede of sound, spectacle, and emotional storytelling that is Jumanji (1995). It’s a jungle-in-a-box, people! Vines through the ceiling, carnivorous plants in the kitchen, and a board game that makes Monopoly look like a nap.
Robin Williams swings in as a man-child with jungle PTSD, Bonnie Hunt brings the therapy and the sarcasm, and two traumatized kids have to survive a suburban safari of crocodiles, monsoons, and—you guessed it—giant freakin’ mosquitoes. Roll those dice, face your fears, and join us as we crack open this wild '90s time capsule—because in Jumanji, the only way out… is through.

He'll get more than he bargained for when he realizes that the town is being run by a corrupt businessman who doesn't like out-of-towners messing with his "business."

Will they be able to get out alive, clear their names and take down the crooks? Do we really care as long as there's enough shootouts and explosions? It's Tango & Cash.

I love the Power Glove. It's so bad. And when it comes to The Wizard, we'll leave it up to you to decide what camp you're in. Is this movie "bad" in the 80s sense of the word — like the Power Glove? This time we take our seats and add up whether this movie Stands the test of time and still Delivers the goods.

Now 80 years later Superman has become an integral part of western culture and his influence can be seen across the world. In Part 2 of our homage to the Man of Steel, we run through the history of Superman over the airwaves as well as the big and small screens.

In Part 1 of our homage to the Man of Steel, John talks the character of Superman and the evolution of Superman comics from 1938 to 2018.
I think most of the stories I listed as being my favorite Superman stories of all time ended up on this list as well, but here's a collection of some of the best or most memorable Superman stories from the last 80 years:

The Evolution of the Super-SuitWhether it stands for an "S" or for "hope," that bright symbol emblazoned Superman's suit is one of the most readily identifiable symbols in the world. The suit hasn't been without some changes here and there, though. I always find these collections of super-suits a fun recollection of how things have changed over time with regard to the Man of Steel's wardrobe.
April is our month of movies that are just weird or different enough not to fit into some of the other themes we had assigned to each month. In 1987, Frank Miller jumped back and showed us Bruce Wayne's formative first year as the Batman in Batman: Year One. You see what I did there? It's called PRINCE of Darkness and the visions from the future take place in 1999, so it's like the song "1999 (Party Like It's 1999)" by Prince. Right? Shut up.
Anyway, apparently Jesus was an alien who started a secret society 2,000 years ago which became the Catholic Church and kept the secret that what we thought was God was really the Anti-god and is evil and his son (the Prince of Darkness) was contained within a canister of ectoplasm for 2,000 years. Now the Canister of Satan is ready to open and literally unleash Hell on earth.

He gets more than he bargained for, however, when Lex Luthor returns to the scene and has engineered the perfect weapon of mass destruction: Golan-Globus... (Sorry... did it again...) Nuclear Man!

Have you ever had one of those days where you had a plan in mind, but everything went wrong? Let's say, for example, you planned to be miniaturized and injected into a lab rabbit so you could study it from the inside, but instead the lab was attacked by saboteurs who wanted to steal the technology for themselves and you ended up being inadvertently injected into a grocery store assistant manager who also happens to be a hypochondriac. Typical, right?

Legend has it, that it was written by the dark ones: NECRONOMICON EX MORTES; Roughly translated...The Book of the Dead. To trace the origin of the Book, we must go back...back...to a day when spirits ruled the earth. When the seas ran red with blood. It was this blood that was used to ink the book. Most of our 80s movies have been the nostalgia-filled romps through the sporting world, fantasy adventures, time traveling teens, or the high school hangups of John Hughes... this episode we take a turn into a dark corner of the 80s with Less Than Zero. Based on the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis (writer of American Psycho), this film follows three friends during the winter break after their high school graduation. Clay has gone east to attend an Ivy League school, leaving his girlfriend Blair and best friend Julian back in Los Angeles, where Blair is modeling and Julian has failed at being a record producer. To top it all off, Julian and Blair have fallen prey to the LA drug and party scene. When Clay comes back home for Christmas, he realizes that he might be the only one who can pull his friends out of this pit.
We've got Glass (the sequel to M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable), a little Indy 5, a few other movie news snippets... then Dennis finally gets to gush about his love for Lea Thompson in this movie (or did he really have a crush on Mary Stuart Masterson all along?) It's 1987's under-appreciated John Hughes' film — Some Kind of Wonderful.
John went to C2E2 in Chicago this last weekend and ended up on the WGN Evening News. We geek out over old-school He-Man cartoons, Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, and we open up a dimensional gateway to Eternia so we can talk about Masters of the Universe. And we have the best fantasy-cast for a He-Man reboot ever. We hope you enjoy... and "All Hail, King Lubic!"
Planes, trains, and The Last Jedi are on the table for this discussion. We opine about the future of the Force and end up arguing about the final scene of the John Hughes' classic road trip movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
Alvin, Simon, and Theodore along with the Chipettes embark on a race around the world to see who is the most globetrottingest of them. (Don't even try to look that one up, it's not a word.) Little do they know, they've been duped into smuggling diamonds and cash for Claudia and Klaus!
We also talk about the upcoming 2019 slate of Batman-related films, the passing of Don Rickles, the trailer for The Mummy and future Universal Monster remakes, and the outstanding new Thor: Ragnarok trailer.
It's episode #125... our Sasquatchcentennial! (Or whatever you call 125.) It's also a longer than usual episode as the gang's all together and we talk about Spider-Man: Homecoming, It, Justice League, Joss Whedon's Batgirl movie, Tommy Wiseau's The Room and our favorite movie sword fights of all time. And, oh yeah... this little fantasy adventure called The Princess Bride.
In the debate over favorite James Bond actors, Timothy Dalton seems to get the short end of the stick, having only featured as 007 for two films. This time around, we try to explore why this 007 didn't last long and whether The Living Daylights deserves to be ranked among the weakest Bond movies.
Beauty and the Beast with the kids. Matrix remake discussion with Patrick. What are the kids these days clamoring for...? Apparently an Alfred Pennyworth movie. (According to a kindergartener.)
So I hope that you have signed on for some action ladies and gentleman, because you are going to get it. Grab your shotguns and your crowbars... it's time for a good old fashioned Chicago liquor raid. That's right... it's The Untouchables!
In this episode we're strictly adhering to the Podcasting Code Section 3-605. 10. 20. 22. 24. 26. 50. 70. 80. It specifies: discuss the new Wonder Woman trailer, Dragnet, preferably with a high shine.

It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage. For Logan, however, it might just be both. An aging Logan is living out his days as a limo driver while he cares for Charles Xavier, who is suffering from a degenerative brain disease. They're forced out of seclusion when a young girl with remarkable ties to Logan and his past is dropped into their lives. And she's got claws. Did we mention the claws?
Take Toucan Sam — that lovable cereal box version of Cyrano de Bergerac — and make him a lovestruck human in charge of the most inept fire brigade ever. Throw in a love triangle, a bunch of nasal puns, and dueling with tennis rackets... follow your nose and you've got Roxanne!
We take some time to talk about our reactions to the Oscars and the sudden passing of Bill Paxton.
Kids. All Lego Movie podcasts start with kids. So I got mine to sit down with me and talk about what they loved about the Lego Batman Movie.
Life's a beach... and then you get stuck in summer school. The long, boring hours in the classroom. Freddy Shoop didn't want to be there... he didn't ask to be there... but he has to, because he's the teacher. In order to save his teaching job for the next school year, Mr. Shoop must take his group of misfit students from zeroes to passing in just a few weeks.
Loretta Castorini is a bookkeeper living in New York who’s just gotten engaged to a man she doesn’t love. When she calls on his estranged brother to invite him to the wedding, she finds more than she bargained for and begins to fall for him. In the midst of all this, everyone around her seems to be struggling with their own search for love.
Joanna is a wealthy woman who lives aboard her yacht with her husband Grant. When she wants some work done on the boat, she hires carpenter Dean Proffitt. After an argument, she refuses to pay him. Later when she falls overboard and suffers amnesia from a bump on the head, Dean tricks her into coming back home with him and pretends she is the mother of his four children.
The world meets nobody halfway, least of all Lincoln Hawk. He's a hard-working truck driver who's driven to bond with his estranged son and does so through truck driving and arm wrestling. It's a rocky start, but we won't leave you with a cliffhanger. He must go all the way to the arm wrestling championship in Vegas to keep his son. It's over the top. And that's the title of the movie too.
Let's say you hit an animal in the woods. Do you lash it to the roof of the car and bring it home? Well, if you enjoy roadkill cuisine... sure! But if you're the Henderson family returning home from a camping trip, you'll either come to regret that decision... or you might just have your life changed by it.
When biology and the prejudices of others conspire to keep H.I. and Ed childless, what do they do? Steal a baby, of course. Now they're embroiled in a scheme that involves Huggies, the Federal B.I., The Lone Biker of the Apocalypse, blackmailing best friends, Dr. Spock, and two convicts who released themselves on their own recognizance. It must be Raising Arizona!
Our first delivery of 1987 is Three Men and a Baby. Three bachelors have their lives turned upside down when a new woman appears. At first they try to change her... but it's their lives that end up transformed.
The best of the best come together to make themselves better... and when they do, they sit around and talk about Top Gun. This podcast is unpredictable. And dangerous.
Paul Stephens is a brilliant high school student who decides to build an atomic bomb in order to teach a lesson to weapons researcher Dr. John Mathewson, who has hidden his top secret lab in the middle of Ithaca, New York. Paul takes his show on the road to the National Science Fair, but is nearly intercepted by the military. Can Paul unmask the secret government facility in time, or will it blow up in his face?
It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
"Elias was a crusader. Now, I got no fight with any man who does what he's told, but when he don't, the machine breaks down. And when the machine breaks down, we break down. And I ain't gonna allow that in any of you. Not one." Platoon.
She might've worn blue velvet, but that didn't really change how we felt about this movie. We came away from this one not hating or loving David Lynch... just realizing that he might not be our cup of tea. John and Pat talk about deconstructing American life, threnodies, and Laura Dern.
Sherlock Holm... I mean, William of Baskerville and his young pupil are called to an Italian abbey in 1327 to take part in a debate over the poverty of the church. While there they become embroiled in a murder mystery that threatens the lives and faith of everyone involved.
Arnold Schwarzenegger — the most inconspicuous person on the planet — is thrust into an undercover operation where he must blend in to the mob and move his way up into the organization in order to take it down and get revenge for Ralphie's dad.
