We are thoroughly back into our regular episodes after a bumpy, special-riddled journey of recent times. And this one is about Erasure's sixth album 'I Say I Say I Say' from May of 1994. We have already done an Erasure album back in Season 2 and we thought that that record was just ok, maybe this one will be more up our street?

Yes, yes, ANOTHER diversion from our regular journey through the 90s, this time an episode all about Senser's debut album 'Stacked Up' from May 1994. This is an album that we both have a lot of love for, one that we played over and over when it came out and so we were keen to check it out again to see how it stands up after nearly 30 years.

If you've ever heard Dave talk about Blur on the podcast before you'll know that he was NOT looking forward to this episode one bit. But rules are rules and so we had to cover it and see what we reckoned - the question is did it change Dave's mind? The answer is pretty much a "no" but with some definite concessions along the way.

Sound the Prog Rock Siren, we're back in business with Pink flipping Floyd and their 1994 album 'The Division Bell'. An album which the band thought at the time would be their last - did they try and mix things up for their swansong and put together a record full of upbeat happy tunes to make you laugh and dance? Well, no.

In the second of our mid-1994 sidesteps away from the actual number one albums we decided to do a full episode on Soundgarden's massive breakthrough album 'Superunknown' which was released on the same day as last episode's NIN 'The Downward Spiral'.

We're both big fans of this record but came to it from different angles back in the day and so are interested to see if the whole thing stands up 30 years later. It's our 100th episode!! Which is mad enough in itself so we figured we should mark the occasion with a bonus episode on a true classic album of the 90s, Nine Inch Nails 'The Downward Spiral'. Dave came into this one already a huge fan of the record but Krister was brand new to a lot of it.

Both of us love some Smiths tunes but don't really know any of Moz's solo stuff so we're not sure what this is going to be like going in.

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why did two Enigma albums have to get to number one meaning we are duty bound to listen to them? 1994 continues its rollercoaster up and down ride with 'The Cross Of Changes', the second album from new age bastards Enigma.

After last episode's adventure into pop-dancehall we're doing a pretty extreme 180 into the world of Tori Amos and her second solo album 'Under The Pink' from February 1994. Will Dave decide that these songs could also be improved with some toasting from the man Chaka D? We shall find out.

Season Five, people! Imagine that if you can: we have survived the albums from 1990-93 relatively unscathed and we're now diving headfirst into 1994 to see what that holds for us. And it appears to hold Chaka Demus & Pliers.

We're back with a bonafide POP monster in the form of Take That's second album 'Everything Changes' from October of 1993. Quite simply one of the biggest boy bands of the decade and indeed of all time with their breakthrough record - but does it stand up to a fresh listen nearly thirty years down the line?

It turns out that this was the Pet Shop Boys' first, and only, number one album which was a surprise to both of us considering how big they were in the latter half of the 1980s but neither of us had actually heard a PSB's album in full before so we went into this with pretty high hopes that there would be some gems inside. Just how many gems we did uncover remains to be seen.

We confess right at the start of this one that we were not fans of Ms Carey in the early 90s but tried to keep an open mind going into the episode. And it's fair to say that more than once we were very pleasantly surprised; consider some of those words completely eaten.

We've got halfway through the number one albums of 1993 and have come across this beast which was at the top spot for seven weeks that summer. Is that because it's totally amazing and the British public were right to keep on buying it? Or is it because they did an Elvis cover that was lightweight enough to get on the radio constantly? It's a mystery.

Thankfully alongside having to discuss this record we get to talk about other acts such as Clutch, Cypress Hill and, er, Snow.

What DO you do after releasing 'Achtung Baby' and already going off piste from what you're known for? Well, if you're U2 in 1993 then the answer is you go even more experimental and try new things to see what works. 

For this episode we have a very special guest in the form of Stephen Hill from Metal Hammer and the Riot Act podcast who is probably the biggest U2 fan we know and agreed to come on and tell us why we're wrong if we say we don't like one of their songs. It was a real treat for us to have this chat with him - go and follow him on Twitter so you can read some of the articles he writes about bands like Tool and Radiohead and make sure you check out the Riot Act Podcast itself to keep yourself up to date with all the new releases worth knowing about. Almost halfway through 1993 now and after a few episodes of more leftfield (let's just forget that we ever talked about Cliff Richard) records we've come to a big pop album in the shape of 'janet.' by Janet Jackson. Neither of us have ever heard the full album before but since seven of the songs were released as singles surely we must know quite a lot of it already, right? Right?

After the whole Manchester scene had exploded around them, with baggy and shoegaze coming to the fore and then fading out again, with their label Factory Records and their club The Hacienda becoming the absolute epitomes of cool, could New Order find their place in a new decade?

Songs tinged with Jesus and saxophone solos straight out of 1987 all over the place; let's take a minute to remember that this was whole grunge was taking over the whole world. Hey, remember that time that David Bowie said he wanted to create a new form of melodic house music? Of course you do, don't pretend otherwise. This episode we are looking at his 'Black Tie, White Noise' album from April 1993 and it's definitely pretty hard to categorise. It was hailed as a return to form by some people at the time but does it hold up nearly thirty years after release?

In other music news we get to have a chat about acts like LL Cool J, The Fall and Poison among many others but it's realistic to say that the majority of our time is taken up being surprised by the amount of saxophone (and other horns) all over the Bowie album.

We also mention the fact that this episode goes out to the memory of the wonderful Phil Jerrod who was a stand-up comic and good friend to Dave who sadly passed far too young just a few weeks back. And to regular listener and friend of the show Mat Davies who similarly left us just recently as well - our hearts go out to friends and family of both of these truly lovely, creative and kind men.

Time to get spaced out and explore the world of Monster Magnet's 1993 album 'Superjudge' as requested by one of our listeners. Basically he made a big enough donation to the show via our PayPal that we couldn't say no but luckily we didn't actually want to because we both love a bit of Monster Magnet.

So indulge us chatting about a load of stoner rock and big weird riffs, psychedelic nonsense and lyrics that run the gamut from having sex with the Andromeda Galaxy to becoming an ape. Nope, not a clue.

Krister remembers really liking those big three first singles while Dave remembers actively hating the band and all they stood for when he was an angry 17 year old.

THAT RIFF! THAT STYLE! THOSE FLARES! With Lenny Kravitz's 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' we may be checking out an album from 1993 but it's one that was trying to sound like it was from 1970 in the first place so buckle up for double time-travelling.

Krister had never heard the whole album before and Dave only had the vaguest of memories of it so we went in pretty blind, hoping for a sea of big guitar rock and Hendrix-style solos all over the place but found something much more calm and reigned-in which was very unexpected.

But we also get to chat about Naughty By Nature, Right Said Fred (and a potential name for a tribute act) and Mark Lanegan. All of which are included on the episode's playlist along with the full Kravitz album.

Yes, it's been a while since we've done a full on 'pop' album but here we are with one of the biggest boy bands in the UK in the 90s and their debut album 'Walthamstow'. Containing their hits 'Deep', 'House Of Love' and 'It's Alright' as well as quite a lot of utter nonsense, we dig in to see how this bad boy sounds 30 years after release. It's quite something.

But as well as marvelling at how East 17 maintained a career we discuss bands like Dinosaur Jnr and Belly; Dave effuses about one of his all time favourite albums 'Slip' by Quicksand; and Krister reveals that he still has absolutely no idea how to pronounce Einsturzende Neubauten.

WHAT THE HECK? Yes indeed, it's the first episode of Season 4! We've finished with the music of 1992 and are casting it off like a bootleg T-shirt that you bought outside the gig but then lost all of its backprint and one of its sleeves after just one wash.

And here we are looking down the barrel of a very exciting 1993 with so many amazing bands and new genres appearing almost weekly, a brand new world. So obviously we're starting this journey off with Little Angels and their album 'Jam' which it turns out, no really, got to number one in January 1993. I know.

It's a band and a genre that both of us thoroughly ignored at the time so neither of us had any clue what this was going to sound like - well I mean, that's not strictly true but you know what we mean.

But along the way we do get to chat about other bands like Apache Indian, Jesus Jones and The The so that's always a treat. All of these acts, as well as the entire Little Angels album, are included on this episode's companion playlist.

Welcome to our festive themed special all about ABBA 'Gold', their Greatest Hits which was released in 1992 and became one of the best selling albums of all time. We've got a very special guest helping us out on this one in the form of comedian Sean McLoughlin who is a big ABBA fan, as is Krister. However, Dave fucking hates ABBA. Like really hates them. So we decided to do this special and take on the forms of Christmas joybringers, trying to convince Dave that he's just being an ABBA grinch and should let them into his life at this time of goodwill and wonder. How successful we were in that task, you'll find out soon enough.

Massive thanks once again to Sean for joining us on this one, it was an absolute treat to have him on, he's genuinely one of the funniest comics around today so do check him out when live gigs start happening again. Here's the second part of our rundown of our top ten albums of 1992 for you. Probably not a lot of surprises in here but you simply can't argue with some of these choices - so many great albums! It's Bon Jovi's big return after their 80s heyday - Jon Bon Jovi has cut off his big hair and the band has decided to go for a "more mature" sound in this post-grunge world of 1992. Great. Dave was a big fan of these guys in the 80s while Krister was a lot more ambivalent and had never heard this album before listening for the show. 

But in between talking about Bon Jovi's more grown-up attitude and divergence from their poodle-pomp reputation we get the chance to mention albums by Ice Cube and Dr Dre and singles by the likes of Charles & Eddie, Wrexxx n Effect and U2 among many others.

Yes yes yes, we know that this was never a number one UK album and therefore it doesn't fit our remit, but our podcast, our rules. Both Dave and Krister are such big fans of this album that we decided to do a full bonus episode on it to give it the props it deserves.

And not only that but we were lucky enough to persuade the legendary man behind Download Festival, Andy Copping to come and talk to us about his recollections of the album coming out back in 1992 and all the times he's put the band on from his days of booking gigs at Nottingham Rock City up to getting them to headline Download in 2010. We've included about half of the full chat in this episode but we'll put the whole thing out by itself in a couple of days so that you can hear all of Andy's thoughts and stories.

We are back with a much more frivolous and light-hearted episode than our previous one so you can expect many more smutty jokes and terrible puns throughout alongside our usual incisive music knowledge and expertise. Ahem.

This week we are listening to and chatting about Prince's 'Love Symbol' album which Dave has vague memories of from back in 1992 and Krister has definitely never heard before in his life. And because it's Prince, and you can't tell him what to do, there are 18 tracks on the album across about 50 different genres. So plenty to get stuck into, alongside the whole thing about it being a rock opera soundtrack to another flopped Prince movie.

We do also get the chance to talk about things like Madonna, Temple of The Dog and that awful rave version of the Tetris music so there's something to look forward to. Well this is a massive album and deserves a lot of time devoted to it, so we did. Fair warning - there are some subjects touched upon in our discussion that might be a bit too much for some people; the album itself is all about death, mortality, suicide, pain, grief etc and so we talk about our own issues and experiences with such things so if you think this might be a bit too heavy for what is normally quite a jaunty podcast with too many jokes about farts and dicks then we understand if you want to skip it. But there are also a load of stupid things we talk about as well in amongst the more heavy bits. Just so you know.

We do also get the chance to talk about other bands such as The Prodigy, Suede and the Jesus Lizard so that's something to get your teeth into as well.

It was 1992, a time of musical turbulence and experimentation, when new and exciting bands were cutting through the dead weeds of a changing music industry and forever leaving their mark on a brave new world. So what better time for Mike Oldfield to have a number one album with his long-awaited sequel to 1973's original 'Tubular Bells'.

We had no idea what to expect from this one, as you'll find out pretty much straight away, but we were definitely interested to see what made it such a big deal upon release. Along the way we also chat about the likes of The Shamen, Brand New Heavies and Skid Row among other people in the charts at the time.

Because no festivals are happening this year Dave and Krister wanted to have a very quick chat about some of their favourite times from previous years at Download watching some of the best rock and metal bands of the 90s. This is just a one-off special, totally fine if you want to skip two middle aged men reminisce about getting drunk in a field and loving live music.

Also, this was recorded over Zoom using that audio output so the sound quality is slightly lower than usual. The quality of the chat is its usual rubbishness though, that's not changed.

Grebo is an oft-overlooked genre from the time: is that for the best or are we unfairly overlooking what it had to offer? With opinions ranging from "not really bothered" to "actively disliked them" between Krister and Dave will this album win them round?

And it turned out surprisingly well if we do say so ourselves. Another album that neither of us had actually ever heard before but obviously we know plenty of Cure songs so we were looking forward to this one.

We do get to discover the link between Jimi Hendrix, RSF and Taylor Swift though which seems unlikely but is actually true, and we reveal a US alt-rock band that almost took Right Said Fred on tour with them in 1992 until their management pointed out what a dreadful idea that actually was.

The Boss is back with a long awaited album. In fact he's back with two released on the same day, but we're just looking at the one that got to number on in March 1992, Human Touch. Neither Dave nor Krister knew this one at all, or much Bruce Springsteen in general if truth be told outside of the big hits. Will this be the one that converts them to megafans?

Good crikey, it's Season 3 of Pop, Collaborate & Listen! And what better way to start off our journey through 1992's number one albums than Wet Wet Wet? Well, probably loads of ways to be honest but we don't make the rules. We just listen to what the pop charts dictate and then whinge about it for an hour or so each week.

Neither Dave nor Krister had ever heard this whole album before because of course not so it really was a journey into the unknown. Obviously we were familiar with the big 80s hits that the band had released and with their seemingly neverending cover version of 'Love Is All Around' but this album was unfamiliar territory. Did it convert us to a newfound love of Pellow & Co? We shall have to see.

During our conversation we look at an absolute ton of other releases that came out in the six week period at the start of 1992, there are some absolute treasures that we chat about like KISS, Daisy Chainsaw and Sultans of Ping just for starters. While we know our own rules - we listen to and talk about every number one album of the 90s so long as it's not a compilation - we just simply could not find enough to say about Enya's 'Shepherd Moons' album and so we give it the most cursory of five minute conversations before moving onto the next on our list which is 'We Can't Dance' by Genesis. For obvious reasons, namely that we weren't 40 year old men at the time, neither of knew this album from when it was released. But, being 40-ish year old men now, can we finally appreciate Phil, Mike and Tony?

We get the chance to talk about other stuff like U2, Altern-8 and Sonata Arctica this week and you get to hear Krister's lovingly prepared Enya Megamix. Lucky you.

Continuing in the 'pop' vein for a minute, this week we're listening to Erasure's album 'Chorus' which came out in October of 1991. Neither of us were familiar with this one at all so it was very new and fresh all round. But did we enjoy it? Is it all as good as the classics we knew like 'A Little Respect' and 'Stop'? We shall have to see.

And this week we get the chance to chat about other stuff like Teenage Fanclub, Slayer and Carcass so there's definitely some guitar music mixed in for good measure.

We KNOW! Stop shouting at us - yes it's another bonus episode on an album that wasn't actually ever number one, but how could we NOT? This album meant an awful lot to both Dave and Krister on their musical journeys and so they revisit it to talk about how important it is but also to see if it stands up as a full album nearly 30 years later. It's not too much of a spoiler to say that they're both very pleased with this re-listen.

The most Canadian thing to happen to our podcast to date, this episode is all about Bryan Adams' 1991 megahit 'Waking Up The Neighbours' which does indeed feature THAT song. Does the rest of the record stand up against such a world-beating single? Would you want it to?

Dave's been looking forward to this one for weeks - G'n'R are one of his favourite bands of all time and he played this album over and over in his youth so he's got LOTS to say about it. Krister had never heard it before now and only really knows the big tunes off 'Appetite For Destruction' so he was pretty nervous going into this one. Will it be as good as Dave remembers? Will it be as bad as Krister fears?

Amidst all the discussion of why Axl Rose is such a dickhead sometimes we manage to fit in chat about Soundgarden, Rozalla and Prince as well.

After the all-conquering monolith that was 'Brothers In Arms', Dire Straits returned in 1991 with the long-awaited follow-up 'On Every Street'. So is it as good? Did it spawn another groundbreaking cartoon video of removal men carrying fridges? The answer to at least one of those questions is "no".

But while talking about it we do get the chance to chat about other things such as Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch, Mr Bungle's first album and finding out that NIN's 'Pretty Hate Machine' came out two years before Dave thought it did. Mind BLOWN.

We both remember and like the single 'Crazy' - will the rest of the album hold some previously unknown (to us) delights? We shall see.

Following straight on from last week's episode this is the second half of the bonus podcast we recorded to discuss a couple of albums that were released while Eurythmics Greatest Hits was number one and were pretty special to us. This week sees us talk about the Smashing Pumpkins' debut album 'Gish' which was released on May 28th 1991 and made a big impact on at least one of your hosts at the time.

We know, we know - we're not supposed to do episodes on Greatest Hits or compilations but the Eurythmics album was number one for ten weeks in total and during that time two of our very favourite albums were released so we thought we'd take the chance to bend the rules and put out a couple of bonus episodes to wax lyrical about them. This week you'll hear us talking about Eurythmics (albeit quite briefly) and then you'll hear us going on at length about one of Dave's favourite albums, Primus's 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese'. He chooses five tracks from it as a sampler which we have a listen to and discuss. We also have a talk about loads of other really great albums that came out in this ten week period of 1991 - it's genuinely an exciting time for music so please forgive us as we get excited about things that we love.

HOLD THE PHONE. Has 1991 finally given us what could actually be described as a 'classic album'? Well, both Dave and Krister remember it fondly and it's certainly touted as a classic but does it stand up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later? We shall see.

The conversation takes us down the usual strange pathways making mention of the likes of Chesney Hawkes and Megadeth and we also see Dave making a comparison between one of the REM songs and a certain Kenny Loggins tune - is he right or just mental? You decide.

Welcome to episode three of our new season and enjoy taking a step back in terms of audio quality for one week because we recorded this one out of sequence, before we upgraded our microphones. Hurray! But ignore that if you can as we are joined by our first ever GUEST on the podcast, Si Sharp, to delve into the guts of Jesus Jones' album 'Doubt' from February 1991. Si is an expert on many musical topics and genres but has a special place in his heart for this particular sort of indie stuff, it's what he grew up on and loved dearly.

We are back after our break with a new season and a new year's worth of number one albums to listen to. 1991 kicks off with Enigma's debut album and it definitely makes a big impression on Dave and Krister as you will hear. You may also hear that the sound quality has improved a bit and we no longer sound like we're recording in a bucket in a field. Or at the very least, a better quality bucket. Hurrah for new equipment.

Paul Simon's follow-up to Graceland was much anticipated, and it obviously got to number one since we're talking about it here, but is it any good? Do you have to like "world music" to get it? Into October of 1990 and we've hit upon an album that Krister used to love and remembers very fondly. Will it be as good as he remembers? Dave doesn't really give a shit one way or the other as this sort of early 90s indie passed him right by and at quite some distance.

We discuss Tim Burgess' bizarre lyrics, the use of Hammond organs in music generally, and how embarrassing it would be to sustain an injury in a fight at a Status Quo concert. We also get the chance to play and talk about the likes of Maria McKee, MC Hammer and, god help us all, Scooter.

Neither of us have heard this whole album before and we agreed that we were looking forward to it - does it hold up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later?

Our ninth episode takes us into August of 1990 and Prince is at number one for one week only with 'Graffiti Bridge', his soundtrack to his godawful film of the same name. We get songs about dancing, songs about sex, songs about a dead father, more sex stuff, one about an actual bridge, and some more sex.

Dave is an absolutely massive Prince fan so what will he make of this having not heard it in many years? Krister doesn't give much of a shit either way; will the purple sex goblin impress him with his kitten heels and falsetto vocals?

We knew that Pavarotti was on its way so we very briefly chat about his Essential Collection but let's forget that and concentrate on the total gift that is NKOTB's 'Step By Step' album. This is by far the most fun we've had to date, there is just so much ridiculous nonsense to discuss on here. And trust us, some of the best stuff is in the final third as well.

We're halfway through 1990 already and Soul II Soul's second album, 'Vol 2 - 1990: A New Decade" is number one in the UK charts. Dave and Krister both remember this one fondly from their youth but haven't listened to it in many years - does it stand up to scrutiny? Does Jazzie B sound like he should be in Flight Of The Concords? Whose celebrity sex tape would you least want to have to watch? All of these questions come up in some way, shape or form throughout this week's episode for which we can only apologise.

Throughout April and May of 1990 The Carpenters found themselves at number one for a staggering seven weeks with a Best Of compilation. But for one week in the middle of it Fleetwood Mac nicked the top spot off them with 'Behind The Mask' so that's what we discuss in this episode. We do briefly talk about the Carpenters as well, and Jason Donovan and Alannah Myles for good measure. For our second podcast we dive into UK soul/pop act The Christians' sophomore album. Be warned, this episode is not the best sound quality as one side of our conversation ended up as a corrupted file. We've done our best to rescue it though and it's definitely worth bearing with us. Contains plenty of swearing by the way. And lots of unnecessary solos (on the record, not by us).

Our first podcast and what an album to start with. Phil Collins' 'But Seriously' was the first number one of the 90s and with an album of this magnitude there is plenty to talk about. But is it actually any good? Did he manage to finally end the homeless problem with 'Another Day In Paradise'? Why are there so many horns on this record?
