Who Protects Women from Violence?

It is said that “the revolution starts at home”. One cannot combat the violence in society without combating the violence happening at home. One way to address this cycle of violence is to call for legal reform.

 

In this episode of Musawah podcast, we listen to Hala Al-Karib, an activist and research practitioner from Sudan. She is the Regional Director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA). We also listen to Sylvia Noagbesenu, who is a human rights lawyer, a social policy specialist, and a gender equality advocate from Ghana. She is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Initiative for Gender Equality and Development in Africa (IGED-Africa).

 

With Sylvia and Hala, we examine the substantive and transformative measures needed to reform personal status and family laws. We also look into existing egalitarian family laws on the continent, as examples that change is indeed possible.
