Day 31 The Locked Chest

DAY 31 — THE LOCKED CHEST

A widower kept an old wooden chest in his attic.
For decades, he refused to open it.
“Too many memories,” he whispered whenever anyone asked.

One day, a heavy storm shook the house.
Rain leaked through the roof,
and water dripped right onto the chest.

Panicking, he rushed upstairs and opened it—
not out of desire,
but out of necessity.

Inside he found not pain,
but letters from his wife filled with love,
stories of their early marriage,
photos he had forgotten existed.

He sat on the floor, weeping.
“All these years…
I locked away treasure because I feared the ache.”

Many hearts carry a chest like this.
We avoid certain memories,
certain parts of our story,
certain truths about ourselves—
not because they contain danger,
but because they contain grief.

Lent is the season God gently invites you
to unlock the chest:
to face what you’ve stored away,
to let Him transform wounds into wisdom,
to discover beauty beneath the fear.

Avoidance is not healing.
Opening is.
Inside your locked places,
God has hidden grace.
