Comments and questions that are casual in one culture may be disrespectful in another. The English language is full of subtle words and expressions which, if used without consideration, but may disturb those that you're trying to communicate with.
I'm not saying never use these phrases, I invite you to speak however you're comfortable. However, being aware of the meanings of some phrases and how native English speakers use them can save you a lot of trouble in future misunderstandings.
