Appropriation vs. Appreciation

What is the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation? Since we are three white American romance writers doing a show centered on exploring Korean dramas, this feels like an important topic to address early on.

Our intent with this podcast is to honor and celebrate the craft that goes into Kdrama and the fun ways writers play with romance tropes in particular, without inadvertently diminishing Korean people or relegating them into stereotypes. We discuss definitions of appropriation and appreciation, share how we are trying to connect with culture in ways like language studies and history, things to avoid, and how positive racism is also a thing.
