ChatGPT just added a Work mode and the power user corner of the internet lost its mind. I think that reaction is completely misguided. ChatGPT Work isn't for people already running Claude Code or Codex every day - it's for the other billion people who've been stuck in chat mode since 2023. Using Ethan Mollick's four-stage framework, I walk through exactly where we are in the AI timeline and why agentic AI going mainstream is a bigger deal than any UI complaint.

The practical shift is simple: match the modality to what you actually want out of the AI. Use Chat when you're exploring and the answer itself is the output. Use Work when you know what you want to make and need the AI to go build it. Use Codex when you're shipping software. I also show the handoff workflow - start in Chat, get the shape of the idea, then port it straight into Work using a share link. That alone unlocks a lot of value most people are leaving on the table.
