Braveheart (1995) | The Cutting Room

They may take our lives, but they'll never take the historical accuracy. Mainly because there wasn't a great deal of it to take. Mel Gibson's Braveheart (1995) plays gleefully fast and loose with the facts, then went and won five Oscars, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

Gibson directs and stars as William Wallace, marshalling thousands of extras (a good number of them Irish Army reservists) across some genuinely enormous battle sequences. Luke, Westy and Matt weigh the spectacle against the liberties, get into that rousing and much-pinched speech, and deliver three scores out of 10. Freedom, or fiction?
