What do you do when your best friend decides, out of nowhere, that he simply doesn't like you any more? On a small Irish island in 1923, the answer involves a set of shears and several fingers.

That grim, very funny premise powers Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), the tragicomedy that reunited his In Bruges pairing of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan alongside them. The direction, the razor-sharp writing, the Irish Civil War rumbling away in the background, the beloved donkey and the awards haul all come under the microscope. A highlight each from Luke, Westy and Matt, three scores out of 10, and the question of whether the saddest break-up in modern cinema makes the grade.
