The marketing was so convincing that some audiences genuinely believed the footage was real and the actors were dead. Luke, Westy, and Matt begin the story of the found-footage phenomenon.

In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the cast, and the second act — including the largely improvised dialogue, the actors left to fend for themselves in the woods, and the dread building from almost nothing.
