Liberation, Leadership and the Work of "Un Otro Mundo Posible"

You’re about to hear a conversation about leadership. Today’s guest, Dr. Annmarie Caño, is an expert in leadership. Dr. Caño draws on her 25-year career in higher education — and her love of Ignatian spirituality — in her work today as a writer, speaker and executive coach who helps higher education and social impact leaders enact personal and systemic change. She draws heavily on liberation theology, liberation psychology and the legacy of the Salvadoran martyrs in her work and her personal reflections. And she has a wonderful new book from Johns Hopkins University Press called “Leading Toward Liberation: How to Build Cultures of Thriving in Higher Education.” But what today’s host, Eric Clayton, continues to find so compelling about his conversation with Annmarie is the fact of where they met: She attended a conference that the Jesuit Media Lab co-hosted on the Catholic imagination and speculative storying. Why? It wasn’t because she’s a burgeoning fantasy author — though they do talk a bit about Tolkien in today’s conversation. No — she attended that conference because she sees as foundational to her mission the work of bringing to life un otro mundo posible — or an “other” possible world. Quite literally, Dr. Caño is thinking about leadership as the creation of other realities, other ways of living, and she is concerned about ensuring that everyone — particularly those often forgotten by society — have a seat at the table.
