The Battle of The Crater with (A. Wilson Greene)
In this episode of American Civil War & UK History, Podcast host Daz was joined by historian and author Wilson Green to discuss the Battle of the Crater.
The Battle of the Crater occurred during the Siege of Petersburg on Saturday, July 30, 1864. After weeks of preparation, Union forces detonated a mine, which created a gap in the Confederate defences of Petersburg, Virginia. However, instead of providing a decisive advantage, the Union forces charged into and around the crater, leading to confusion and disorganisation among the soldiers amid the chaos. General Grant described this failed assault as "the saddest affair I have witnessed in this war."
