Some of these monuments can be explained through known engineering techniques. Others leave important questions about the exact methods their builders used.

In this documentary, we investigate some of the world’s most extraordinary ancient megaliths — beginning with a massive stone weighing roughly 330 tons, and the remarkable engineering problem of how people could move and raise something of that scale.

But size is only part of the mystery.

We explore enormous stone monuments, precisely fitted blocks, ancient quarries and construction sites where researchers have spent decades trying to reconstruct the techniques available to their builders. The deeper we look, the clearer one thing becomes: ancient engineering was often far more sophisticated and organized than it first appears.

Rather than assuming lost technologies or extraordinary explanations, we examine what the physical evidence actually shows — including the tools, materials, labor and practical engineering methods that could have made these achievements possible.

At the same time, there is an important difference between knowing that something could have been built and knowing exactly how the original builders actually did it.

In many cases, no construction manual survived. Archaeologists are left to reconstruct methods from unfinished stones, tool marks, quarries, surviving monuments and experimental archaeology.
