The Ancient Sumerian Object That Still Raises Questions

What did the ancient Sumerians really know about the sky?

Thousands of years ago, the people of ancient Mesopotamia created clay tablets, cylinder seals, mathematical systems, cities, irrigation networks, and some of humanity’s earliest written records. But one small ancient object has become the center of a much bigger mystery.

A Mesopotamian seal known as VA 243 contains a curious celestial-looking symbol: a central shape surrounded by smaller dots. Decades ago, writer Zecharia Sitchin interpreted it as a representation of the Solar System and connected it to his controversial theory of Nibiru. Specialists, however, interpret the image very differently—as a familiar star or divine motif found throughout Mesopotamian art.

At the same time, modern astronomers are investigating a completely separate mystery at the edge of our Solar System. Strange orbital patterns among distant objects have led researchers to propose the possible existence of Planet Nine, a large world that may orbit far beyond Neptune. Importantly, Planet Nine has not yet been directly observed, and alternative explanations remain possible.

So is there really a connection between ancient Sumerian imagery and modern astronomy—or are we seeing patterns that were never intended to be connected?
