The Complete Story of Pangea: When Every Continent Was One

Om avsnittet

What did Earth really look like when almost all of its continents were joined together?

Around 250 million years ago, the world map looked almost unrecognizable. The familiar shapes of Africa, South America, Europe, Asia and North America were joined into an enormous supercontinent surrounded by a vast global ocean. This was Pangea — one of the most extraordinary chapters in Earth’s geological history.

But there is an obvious problem: no one was there to map it.

So how can scientists reconstruct the position of continents hundreds of millions of years ago?

In this documentary, we follow the evidence hidden inside the planet itself — radioactive clocks preserved in ancient minerals, magnetic directions frozen into volcanic rock, mountain ranges that continue across modern oceans, matching fossils found thousands of kilometers apart, and ancient soils that still preserve clues about prehistoric rainfall and climate.

We explore the remarkable story of Alfred Wegener, the German scientist who argued that continents could move long before geology had a convincing mechanism to explain how. His original explanation was wrong, but decades later discoveries on the ocean floor would transform his controversial idea into the modern theory of plate tectonics.

The journey goes much further than Pangea.

We travel billions of years into Earth’s past to see how the first permanent continental crust formed, how ancient landmasses collided and separated, and how earlier supercontinents such as Columbia/Nuna and Rodinia appeared long before Pangea existed.

We also examine the supercontinent cycle — the immense geological process that repeatedly brings continents together, tears them apart, opens new oceans and eventually closes them again over hundreds of millions of years.

Pangea was not the beginning of this story.

And it may not be the end.

The continents beneath our feet are still moving today, continuing a cycle that has reshaped Earth again and again.

Watch to the end as we reconstruct the lost world of Pangea and discover how a planet of separate continents once became one.
