The Sumerians built some of the earliest great cities in Mesopotamia and developed innovations that would shape civilization for thousands of years. But the story becomes even more mysterious.

For centuries, the Sumerians were almost completely forgotten. Their cities had collapsed into enormous earthen mounds, their language had disappeared from everyday use, and their civilization had effectively vanished from recorded memory. Only after archaeologists and linguists began deciphering thousands of ancient clay tablets did their lost world begin to emerge again.

And those tablets contained extraordinary stories about the origins of civilization, the Anunnaki, the transmission of knowledge, humanity's creation, and an ancient flood narrative with striking parallels to later traditions.
