The Unit 731 Iceberg Explained: Japan’s Darkest WWII Secret

What did Unit 731 really hide? Behind the innocent name of a water purification department was one of the most secretive and disturbing military research programs of World War II.

In this documentary, we explore the Unit 731 iceberg, uncovering the hidden history of Japan's biological warfare program, the secret facilities in occupied China, the people responsible, and the decades of silence that followed.

Led by Japanese army officer Shiro Ishii, Unit 731 operated a vast network of classified laboratories, research installations, and military facilities. Its headquarters at Pingfang became the center of a program whose history would remain largely concealed long after the war ended.

But the deeper we go, the more unsettling the story becomes.

Discover how Unit 731 operated under an ordinary medical cover story, how its secret network expanded across Asia, and how surviving documents and eyewitness testimonies eventually revealed what had happened behind closed doors.

We investigate the mysterious Zhongma Fortress, the heavily guarded Pingfang complex, the secret prisoner transfer system, and the historical evidence surrounding biological warfare operations in China.

We also examine the controversial plans to target the American mainland, the destruction of evidence in 1945, and the postwar decisions that allowed important figures connected to the program to escape prosecution.

Why were so many records destroyed? What did American intelligence know? And how did one of World War II's most secretive programs remain hidden for decades?

This documentary takes you layer by layer through the Unit 731 iceberg, separating documented history from disputed claims and exploring the questions that still surround this chapter of World War II.

From forgotten archives and classified military research to survivor testimony and the search for historical accountability, this is the story of Unit 731 and the secrets that history almost lost.
