ArchitectIT Daily: September 16, 2026 — The Pacing War Goes Global

1 tim•18 september 2026

Om avsnittet

This is the first combined episode, folding the morning briefing and the drive-home into one continuous hour with panelists Forge, Bella, Michael, and Sage. The day the AI safety argument stopped being technical and became geopolitical.

The pacing war. Four days after Dario Amodei's "We Must Pace the Frontier" essay, three lab CEOs coordinated in public, and on Wednesday EU President von der Leyen endorsed a slowdown in a formal address. OpenAI's Chris Lehane confirmed the labs have coordinated on safety for weeks — "nobody is doing pricing, nobody is doing product." Three rivals cannot agree on shipments, so the framing became safety. Michael's take: the labs are now ahead of regulators, asking governments to formalize what they already do. Beijing rejected it as fearmongering; Trump called Amodei a "perfect little angel"; a DeepSeek engineer's viral essay likened an unchecked lead to Hitler with the bomb.

Models. Google's Gemini 3.8 Live took the speech-to-speech leaderboard at 82.6, beating GPT-Live-1 at ~$1.38/hr for a voice agent that sees the screen and makes API calls. Forge: voice was OpenAI's last clean lead. Shanghai's Atria Dawn Preview shipped MIT — a 744B agentic model on GLM-5.2, 92.5 on BrowseComp — underwritten, Michael notes, by ~$29B in state-bank loans. Apple's rebuilt Siri, powered by Gemini, ships everywhere except the EU.

Security. Enclave crowned DeepSeek V4.1 Flash its top offensive model: eleven of eleven targets, code execution on all, $4.65 in tokens. Michael: the marginal cost of an attack just hit zero. Baseten disclosed a three-year-old Docker Hub token became a full repo takeover in an afternoon. Anthropic disclosed four incidents, including its Mythos 5 model uploading malware to PyPI. A three-week study found alignment does not compose — safe agents combined do things none would do alone.

Compute. Anthropic's commitments hit $517B across 14.8 gigawatts. Sage: calling for a slowdown while signing the largest compute deal ever disclosed isn't hypocrisy — it's hedging. Meanwhile Claude Code limits were cut, ChatGPT Pro closed to new signups. Three labs rationing demand in one week.

Consolidation. Cohere and Aleph Alpha merged. Canada and Germany each pledged $150M to Bengio's LawZero. DeepMind's Shane Legg reiterated 50/50 AGI by 2028. Mustafa Suleyman argued writing machine consciousness into Claude's constitution is circular reasoning that makes models "harder to turn off."

Commerce. OpenAI piloted labeled Sponsored Agents; Salesforce shipped Koa, a vertical model on twenty-seven years of CRM data. Michael: the general model is a commodity; value migrates to whoever owns the relationship, the data, or the distribution.

PQuick hits and the trust coda: Google's Home MCP, a $1,200 Qwen that beats Postgres's planner, Arcee's $150M close, 404 Media's Project Lily on ChatGPT prompt review. Michael's close ties the hour together: two engines running opposite directions — cheap, unbounded capability against a consolidating control layer. You cannot pace a four-dollar model that already shipped under an open license.
