A Tale of Two Goths

In this episode of Barbarian Banter, we return to our barbarian roots with two brutal and unforgettable Gothic war stories.

Jonas begins with the rise of Fritigern and the Gothic migration into Roman territory, tracing the collapse of Gothic unity under pressure from the Huns, the Christian-pagan divide between Fritigern and Athanaric, the Roman betrayal at Marcianopolis, and the long buildup to the Battle of Adrianople. He breaks down why Adrianople was one of the most decisive barbarian victories in history and why Fritigern deserves far more recognition as one of the great Gothic leaders.

Dane then picks up the story in Ostrogothic Italy with the Gothic resurgence under Totila, leading into the Battle of Faventia and the legendary duel between the Gothic champion Valaris and the Roman commander Artabazes. From single combat and battlefield honor to Totila’s stirring final speech about blood, freedom, and nationhood, this episode explores two powerful Gothic moments that show the barbarian world at its most heroic, violent, and mythic.
