There is a particular kind of greatness that belongs only to things that almost didn't exist. SMiLE, Brian Wilson's long-lost, mythologised, finally-completed masterpiece, is the supreme example of this. Released in 2004 — 37 years after it was abandoned — it is not merely a great album, it is proof that genius, even when shattered, can reassemble itself. That music, even when buried, retains its power. That some things are worth waiting for, even if the wait spans the better part of a lifetime.
