I think it is monumentally significant that the sacrament prayer for the water doesn't just say, "that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son," but that it goes on to make the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the sanctification of the sacrament personal by adding "which was shed for them." Understanding the personal nature of the Atonement of Christ, I believe, is the first step in approaching the sacramental altar hungry for redemption.
