The Palace of Lausus: Constantinople's Lost Museum of Pagan Art

Long before the Topkapı Palace or the Hagia Sophia, Constantinople housed one of the ancient world's most extraordinary collections of pagan sculpture—the Palace of Lausus. This episode explores the eunuch chamberlain Lausus, who served under Emperor Theodosius II in the early 5th century, and his magnificent private museum that rivaled any modern institution.
