In this final episode of our series on Things the Bible DOESN'T Say, we're looking at something many were sure comes straight from the heart of the Bible--the notion of being able to point to a single moment in your life when you definitively "asked Jesus into your heart" or "accepted him as your personal Savior" by praying some form of a "sinner's prayer" to "get saved." And even though those may be popular ways of expressing the Christian faith, it turns out that literally NO ONE in the Bible ever talks about "accepting Christ" or "inviting Jesus into their hearts" or "deciding to make Jesus their personal Lord and Savior." That's because the Biblical witness, while certainly teaching us to have a relationship with Jesus, never sees that relationship as separable from our life together as community. For that matter, the Bible sees salvation as God's corporate action "for us" and "for the world," rather than just "for me." So in this episode, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve unpack this contemporary Christian-ese jargon, in order to look at how it can be helpful, where it can miss something, and how to hold together a personal relationship with a connection to the whole community of God's people.
