Athena Strand's Killer Fights Against Death Penalty | True Crime News

The punishment phase is underway in Texas for Tanner Horner, the FedEx driver who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and killing 7-year-old Athena Strand, and this week his own mother took the stand to testify about a childhood defined by addiction and abuse in a bid to spare him from the death penalty. In Oregon, a 73-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 1983 murder of his girlfriend, a cold case that sat open for more than four decades before a skull found in 1997 was finally identified through modern DNA testing. In California, a first-grade teacher was stabbed to death inside her home in an early morning attack that also left her 25-year-old daughter hospitalized. And in Florida, a man convicted of one of the most brutal killings in Palm Bay history was executed by lethal injection, using his final words to maintain his innocence after more than three decades on death row.
