The 1904 Tour de France marked just the second edition of the race, but nearly meant the end of it. After Maurice Garin took an illegal feed in the first stage, he should have been disqualified. However, because he wasn't while several other riders were, riots erupted. Mobs of fans attacked cyclists with rocks and glass, seeking revenge. Furthermore, several riders got disqualified for taking the train.
