I examine the reported convergence of pressure on three critical energy routes: the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline. Vessel transits through Hormuz reportedly fell to seven on September 11, while the Houthis claimed gains around Mocha, Hanish Islands, and Perim (Mayyun) Island near the Red Sea chokepoint. Brent crude was reported above $100 per barrel after the capture of Mocha.
I also assess reported Iranian missile strikes that damaged U.S. aircraft at an airbase in Jordan, Saudi requests for U.S. strikes on the Houthis, and the claim that East-West Pipeline strikes originated in Iraq rather than Yemen. The strategic danger is not one isolated confrontation: it is the prospect that Iranian-backed partners can threaten maritime passage and Saudi export infrastructure at the same time—turning regional military pressure into a global energy and fuel-price problem.
