I’m a conservative Republican, but the evidence of serious trouble inside the party is becoming difficult to dismiss. Republican officeholders are breaking with President Trump, longtime conservatives are refusing to support some Trump-backed candidates, and Republican voters increasingly sound frustrated with their own party. I examine the tariff backlash, María Elvira Salazar’s public break with Trump, Karl Rove’s Democratic endorsement, the Texas Senate race, and a devastating Fox News poll. The central question is no longer whether Republicans face a difficult midterm election. It is whether the struggle between conservative Republicans and MAGA populists has already begun.
