In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, America declared a war against terror. This war led to the establishment of a covert network of secret interrogation facilities - the clandestine 'black sites' managed by the CIA. Far removed from the media's scrutiny and international law, these facilities were spread across several countries, from Afghanistan to Lithuania. The existence of black sites and the brutal interrogations carried out within them moved past mere conspiracies with their confirmation in the 2014 United States Senate Intelligence Committee report, known as the “Torture Report.”
The harsh and brutal ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ used in these facilities, including waterboarding, sleep deprivation, and physical abuse, crossed the line into outright torture. The objective was to extract intelligence that could prevent further attacks, but these methods often led to false or unreliable information. This chilling chapter in America’s history raises serious ethical and legal questions and challenges our conceptions of justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
