Deep in Chile's Atacama Desert — the driest place on Earth — sits the abandoned ruins of La Noria, a saltpeter mining town founded in 1826 and left to rot when the industry collapsed. What remains is a roofless church, a cemetery of thousands of cracked and leaning crosses, and a legend locals repeat without hesitation: the dead of La Noria don't stay buried after dark.
