Discovering Jazz

Episode 317: CD's I Recently Acquired

N/A • 13 maj 2025

I listened to this podcast after recording it and really enjoyed it. I think you will too! It consists of tracks from cd's that I acquired over the past month, with some explanation as to why I acquired them.

Artists include:

-Wynton Marsalis with J.J. Johnson and again with Willie Nelson. Listening to the latter I get a sense as to why each new Willie Nelson album gets played on some jazz radio stations.

-A Swiss yodeller named Gabriela Martina. Here she does interesting things with a Wayne Shorter composition.

-Two albums sent to me by a 'new show in town'---a jazz promotion company set up by Toronto drummer Ernesto Cervini. One is by Steve Holt playing with Toronto's finest musicians. The other is an Edmonton man (Joshua Banks) and his first cd, celebrating his Filipino roots.

-The great Ahmad Jamal, Live In Paris, 1992.

-A duet with Coleman Hawkins and Sonny Rollins....with Canadian born pianist Paul Bley and bassist Henry Grimes

-Two reissued tracks from a label put down by the Music Heritage Society. One is by guitarist Jim Hall, and the other by vibraphonist Lionel Hampton.

-A track from Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington.

Two of these albums I bought at Edmonton's jazz club, The Yardbird Suite, with the money going to their Littlebirds program geared to turn talented children and youth into inspired jazz musicians. You can contribute to this worthwhile charitable fund by going to Yardbirdsuite.com/donate.
