OCD vs Anxiety | Nervous System Regulation | E62

17 min10 maj 2023

It’s heartbreaking to watch your child shrink under fear, worry, or rituals—and feel helpless.

You’re not alone. And it’s gonna be OK.

Many families confuse anxiety in children with OCD in children, and that misunderstanding can keep kids stuck while parents grow more overwhelmed. In this episode, Dr. Roseann breaks down the difference between stress, anxiety, and OCD and explains what parents can do to help calm the brain first.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

• the difference between stress, anxiety, and OCD in children

• how intrusive thoughts and rituals show up differently from anxiety

• what signs suggest anxiety has become clinical

• practical ways to support nervous system regulation in children

What’s really happening in the brain

Stress is a normal nervous system response.

The brain shifts into alert mode, responds to discomfort, and then returns to calm.

But with anxiety in children, the nervous system stays activated—and when OCD is present, that activation often includes compulsions or rituals meant to reduce fear.

Here’s the difference:

👉 Anxiety = excessive worry that interferes with daily life

👉 OCD = intrusive thoughts + compulsive behaviors meant to neutralize fear

Real-life scenario:

A child says, “I’m afraid I’ll make someone sick,” and washes her hands 20 times before school.

That ritual is a major clue this may be OCD—not just anxiety.

The reframe parents need

Behavior is communication.

It’s not bad behavior—it’s a dysregulated brain.

Your child isn’t trying to be difficult—their nervous system is stuck in fear and looking for relief.

What you can do next

Start by looking for patterns:

👉 does your child avoid things because of fear?

👉 are there rituals, checking, counting, or repetitive behaviors?

👉 is the fear interfering with school, relationships, or daily life?

Then focus on calming the nervous system first.

Helpful supports include:

• breathwork and nervous system tools

• gentle exposure for anxiety

• ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) for OCD

• reducing accommodation of rituals

ERP is the gold-standard treatment for OCD in children and is essential for lasting change.

If you’ve been searching for how to calm a dysregulated child, regulation must come before correction.
