Empty Lifeboats, No Bodies: The Vanishing of SS Naronic
The Atlantic swallowed a 360-foot steamship carrying 74 souls and a lifeboat was later found capsized and empty 500 miles east of Halifax-no wreck, no bodies, no distress signal. How could a purpose-built cattle carrier, launched in 1892 and worth £121,685, simply vanish between Point Lynas and New York?
In this episode, we lay out the timeline and the physical evidence recovered in the weeks after the ship disappeared, presenting the unanswered question that loomed over the official inquiry: what happened to the Naronic and her 74 passengers and crew?
Person: Captain William Roberts
Date: 4 March 1893 (lifeboat sighting)
Location: 500 miles east of Halifax
Event: Capsized empty lifeboat recovered by SS Coventry
Cargo: 2,876 tons including potassium chlorate, sodium sulphide, calcium hypochlorite and acids
- The Naronic measured 360 feet (143 meters) long and 16 meters wide and could hold 1,050 head of cattle.
- She cost exactly £121,685 to build and was not insured by White Star Line.
- Seventy-four people were aboard on the final voyage: 60 crew and 14 passengers (cattle handlers).
- The ship left Liverpool on 15 July 1892 for her maiden voyage and was launched on 26 May 1892.
- Two White Star vessels, the Tauric and the Teutonic, conducted searches and found no wreckage, oil, cargo, or bodies.
