When an Entire Crew Vanished: The Cemfjord's Silent Capsize

Fear of sudden, inexplicable loss grabs you at once: an 83‑metre cement carrier carrying 2,000 tonnes inverted in the Pentland Firth and sank to 82 metres with eight crew gone and no distress call - how could an entire crew disappear without a single signal?

In this episode, we walk through the Cemfjord’s final voyage, its recent safety problems, and the prior unreported list in the same stretch of water, asking whether those red flags could have predicted the disaster - what exactly happened in those final hours?

Person: eight crew members (seven Polish nationals and one Filipino)
Event: capsized and sank to 82 metres with no distress signal
Date: 3 January 2015 (upturned hull spotted at 14:30)
Location: Pentland Firth, North Sea
Cargo: 2,000 tonnes of cement

- The Cemfjord was 83 metres long and 11 metres wide, built in 1984 and converted to a cement carrier in June 1998.
- At 13:00 on 2 January 2015 the Cemfjord was last seen passing through the Pentland Firth; at 14:30 on 3 January 2015 the Hrossey sighted an inverted hull.
- Port State Control detained the Cemfjord in December 2013 at Runcorn for three days for inoperative lifeboat launch apparatus and a non-compliant safety management system.
- In summer 2014 two different Russian captains connected to the Cemfjord were convicted for intoxication at the helm (one fined 10,000 DKK; one imprisoned 35 days and banned from Norwegian waters for two years).
- On 7 October 2014 the ship’s cargo shifted in the Pentland Firth, causing a list that was corrected by ballasting and was not reported to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.
