Electric Cars: Farewell to Rare Earths?

The dependence of electric cars on rare earths—crucial elements for motor magnets—poses economic, environmental, and geopolitical challenges, given China’s dominance in their extraction and refining. However, the automotive industry is actively exploring alternatives, such as ferrite magnet motors (used by GM), copper-based rotors (developed by Renault and Valeo), and nitride-based magnets (researched by Niron Magnetics). Tesla has announced its intention to completely eliminate the use of rare earths, while Nissan is studying the recycling of these materials from end-of-life motors. These initiatives suggest a potential reduction in the need for rare earths in the electric automotive sector.
