Maritime Energy Transition: Electric Vessels, CATL Batteries, and the IMO 2028 Net-Zero Shift

The global maritime sector is undergoing a massive shift toward decarbonization, driven by the upcoming IMO Net-Zero Framework (NZF), which sets strict GHG fuel intensity (GFI) targets starting in 2028. CATL, the world's largest power battery manufacturer, predicts pure-electric vessels will navigate the open seas within three years. CATL has already supplied batteries for nearly 900 vessels. As shipping accelerates towards net-zero, the industry is rapidly increasing orders for alternative fuel ships (LNG, methanol) while grappling with hurdles in fuel supply, infrastructure, and crew competence. Experts emphasize rigorous safety standards for high-energy Lithium-ion battery systems (Li-ion) in marine and offshore applications.
