For centuries, a small Mediterranean island drew the attention of some of the world's greatest empires.

Its strategic location made it a valuable prize, but its history of conquest and foreign rule left deep divisions among its people.

When the island finally gained independence, those divisions erupted into violence, culminating in an invasion that would permanently change its political geography.

Today, its capital remains divided, its former international airport stands abandoned, and a United Nations peacekeeping force patrols a boundary established over half a century ago.
