Exhibitionistas: Notes on Contemporary Art and Life

Digital and Analog | Why Art Speaking (podcasts) and Art Writing (text) Are Both Important

1 tim 4 min6 mars 2026

What if writing and talking about contemporary art and life, art and literature, were two completely different things - but complementary? Instead of pitching them against each other, have we thought about articulating their qualities? Our host, art writer and curator, Joana P. R. Neves, tests this notion with a performance of sorts: reading one of her texts about the modernist writer Gertrude Stein without correcting her mistakes, with a minimum of editing. The goal: to make it apparent how different it is to read a text, read from a script and improvise from it, and to write for the mind’s inner voice.

ART TOPIC is is an exploration of a topic through visual arts or vice-versa. This episode is an experiment in opposing writing to oral communication. It also engages with queer lives at the height of modernism, the notion of genius and its patriarchal tendencies, as well as the intriguing, unique couple of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.

Discover Joana's text "G is for Genius, Grammar and Girl", published on her Substack Art Thinkosaurus. She reads it here as a performance of sorts, with mistakes, reflexions and all, to test voice versus word. What will she discover?

Created & Hosted by Dr. Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer with over 20 years of experience in the contemporary art field. Artistic director of Drawing Now Paris since 2018, she has worked across the industry, from the art market to education. She co-launched the art residency and project space Worldingin 2020. Exhibitionistas’ first year offered exhibition discussions with guest co-host Emily Harding; organically, it grew into a more experimental show exploring art topics, stories and interviews complemented by Joana’s publication Art Thinkosaurus on Substack. She champions ‘Art Wonderment’s’ embrace of complexity against the lure of ready-made opinions. A polyglot, she grew up in Lisbon, studied and lived in Paris, to finally settle in London with her artist husband, four children and two cats.
