Exhibitionistas: Notes on Contemporary Art and Life

Giuseppe Penone | Sculpture as Breath, Drawing as Skin

1 tim 12 min2 maj 2025

Is the Italian contemporary artist Giuseppe Penone a pioneer of eco-art? A late romantic? All of the above? Our host, art curator and writer Joana P. R. Neves is joined by the artist Diogo Pimentão to explore the survey exhibition of this seemingly neo-romantic artist. How did Penone develop his work within one of the most revolutionary movements of Italian and international art, Arte Povera? As one of its youngest members, what sets him apart from the group–could it be his lifelong collaboration with organic, mineral materials and his use of drawing as trace?

Giuseppe Penone is a  visual artist associated with the Arte Povera art movement. He reinvented sculpture, drawing, conceptual photography, art installation, through proto environmental art with the sensibility of a late late romantic.

Curator and art critic Germano Celant created the term Arte Povera in 1967: how does Penone fit into that notion? He seems to have had a singular place in the Italian and global art scene. Have we been forcing a dialogue between his work and Celant’s concept? What other relations with memory and matter has he expanded through his work?

Created & Hosted by Dr. Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer with over 20 years of experience in the contemporary art field. Artistic director of Drawing Now Paris since 2018, she has worked across the industry, from the art market to education. She co-launched the art residency and project space Worldingin 2020. Exhibitionistas’ first year offered exhibition discussions with guest co-host Emily Harding; organically, it grew into a more experimental show exploring art topics, stories and interviews complemented by Joana’s publication Art Thinkosaurus on Substack. She champions ‘Art Wonderment’s’ embrace of complexity against the lure of ready-made opinions. A polyglot, she grew up in Lisbon, studied and lived in Paris, to finally settle in London with her artist husband, four children and two cats.
