Emily Harding, our favourite exhibition goer, is back for another exhibition discussion. Along with art writer and curator Joana P. R. Neves, they visit beloved and prematurely deceased American contemporary artist Mike Kelley’s survey exhibition at Tate Modern. Is this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition an accurate experience of his work? What part did his upbringing and irreverent personality play in his work and in his disappearance (Kelley died by suicide)?

Why was anarchist and punk teenage and later iconoclastic artist fixated on entertainment and youth cultural markers? What role did CalArts play in his artistic career and, by the same token, what is, exactly, the history of CalArts? Did you know it was connected to Walt Disney? From here, the connection between fiction, entertainment, film and life was, it seems, fated. Does this retrospective exhibition, titled “Ghost and Spirit”, connect all these dots?

Created & Hosted by Dr. Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer with over 20 years of experience in the contemporary art field. Artistic director of Drawing Now Paris since 2018, she has worked across the industry, from the art market to education. She co-launched the art residency and project space Worldingin 2020. Exhibitionistas’ first year offered exhibition discussions with guest co-host Emily Harding; organically, it grew into a more experimental show exploring art topics, stories and interviews complemented by Joana’s publication Art Thinkosaurus on Substack. She champions ‘Art Wonderment’s’ embrace of complexity against the lure of ready-made opinions. A polyglot, she grew up in Lisbon, studied and lived in Paris, to finally settle in London with her artist husband, four children and two cats.
