Exhibitionistas: Notes on Contemporary Art and Life

Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum | A Decomposed Film Noir With BIPOC Women at its Centre

1 tim 14 min25 oktober 2024

Our two Exhibitionistas friends, art writer and curator Joana P. R. Neves and dedicated exhibition goer Emily Harding, visit The Curve at The Barbican to see the first institutional exhibition of Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum's work in the UK, titled “It Will End in Tears”. How does the combination of film noir with its femme fatale characters resonate with Phatsimo’s mixed race characters? What influence does the naked “film set” structure have in our perception of the drawings, embedded in it? Can the visitor’s movement in the space activate static images? And what strange power do the women have, or not, in the story we piece together?

Like a film and a film set, Phatsimo’s installation creates an immersive environment. Too much? Emily and Joana’s exhibition walkthrough reveals themes of contained rage, love, jealousy and independence, with dedicated areas suggesting different settings or interiors. How effective is this recomposed but always truncated narrative?

Joana and Emily also provide art student resources via a small introduction of the contemporary artist they focus on along with art banter, meditative explorations, and, often, feminist perspectives, with an attentiveness to issues of racism and eurocentric biases–they try to shift their perspective and are happy for you to extend your knowledge in the comments.

Expect: a colourful artist biography; art history musings; art theory and art language dissected or used in accessible ways; art wonderment in buckets; international art; thoughts on curatorial work; and art etiquette challenges…

Created & Hosted by Dr. Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer with over 20 years of experience in the contemporary art field. Artistic director of Drawing Now Paris since 2018, she has worked across the industry, from the art market to education. She co-launched the art residency and project space Worldingin 2020. Exhibitionistas’ first year offered exhibition discussions with guest co-host Emily Harding; organically, it grew into a more experimental show exploring art topics, stories and interviews complemented by Joana’s publication Art Thinkosaurus on Substack. She champions ‘Art Wonderment’s’ embrace of complexity against the lure of ready-made opinions. A polyglot, she grew up in Lisbon, studied and lived in Paris, to finally settle in London with her artist husband, four children and two cats.
