The two friends who host the podcast, Joana, the art professional, and Emily, the dedicated art lover, are faced with a question: can contemporary art be a form of activism? Zanele Muholi is a South-African non-binary, queer photographer whose art-making focuses on their marginalized community as "visual activism". How, then, do portraits and self-portraiture pierce South-Africa’s LGBTQIA+ discrimination?

This episode raises quite a few fascinating questions: can an art archive be a form of social change? Does sculpture inscribe queer lives into the present or is it devoted to a future queer liberation? But more deeply, is art appreciation in the contemporary art museum on par with policy making? Shockingly, Emily and Joana broke their own rules and visited the show together… which turned out to be quite productive.

Created & Hosted by Dr. Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer with over 20 years of experience in the contemporary art field.
