Exhibitionistas: Notes on Contemporary Art and Life

Zeinab Saleh | How Painting Becomes a Cultural Palimpsest of Intimate Quietness

1 tim 27 min17 maj 2024

As seasoned an art writer and curator Joana P. R. Neves might be, and as used to exhibitions non-art expert but dedicated art lover Emily Harding has been for a while, nothing had prepared them for an exhibition that changes your heart rate, slows you down, and inspires you to take a nap with a cat! How can a ‘simple’ painting exhibition produce such a strong impact? And how did the two friends engage with it?  What very specific memories did it spark in Emily’s mind?

Together, they embark on an art conversation and exhibition walkthrough in Zeinab Saleh's exhibition at the heart of Tate Britain, part of the Art Now program, which welcomes contemporary young British contemporary artists in one of the many rooms of the prestigious museum.

They discover the notion of quiet, and why it is so important to Saleh, a young Muslim woman. Why is quiet dismissed in our culture? How does the artist embraces it and transmit it ion her art, almost magically creating it through mixed media paintings and drawings?

Joana and Emily also provide art student resources via a thorough introduction of the contemporary artist they focus on along with art banter, meditative explorations, and, often, feminist perspectives on histories often built through the obligatory male gaze.

Expect: a colourful artist biography; art history musings; art theory and art language dissected or used in accessible ways; art wonderment in buckets; international art; thoughts on curatorial work; and art etiquette challenges…

The exhibition was curated by Amy Emmerson Martin (assistant curator) and Nathan Ladd (curator).

Created & Hosted by Dr. Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer with over 20 years of experience in the contemporary art field. Artistic director of Drawing Now Paris since 2018, she has worked across the industry, from the art market to education. She co-launched the art residency and project space Worldingin 2020. Exhibitionistas’ first year offered exhibition discussions with guest co-host Emily Harding; organically, it grew into a more experimental show exploring art topics, stories and interviews complemented by Joana’s publication Art Thinkosaurus on Substack. She champions ‘Art Wonderment’s’ embrace of complexity against the lure of ready-made opinions. A polyglot, she grew up in Lisbon, studied and lived in Paris, to finally settle in London with her artist husband, four children and two cats.
