John Tornow - Wild Man of the Wynoochee PART 1 | Old-Time Radio Hour

Deep in the rain-soaked forests of Washington State, a man disappeared into the wilderness and became a legend.

His name was John Tornow.

A towering, reclusive woodsman who preferred the solitude of the forest to the company of civilization, Tornow would become the central figure in one of the Pacific Northwest's most terrifying and controversial manhunts.

In 1911, the mysterious deaths of his two young nephews set off a chain of events that would leave a community gripped by fear, lawmen searching the wilderness, and newspapers spinning tales of a savage killer lurking among the trees.

But was John Tornow the cold-blooded murderer the newspapers portrayed? A misunderstood mountain man driven to desperation? Or was the truth somewhere in between?

In Part 1 of John Tornow: Wild Man of the Wynoochee, James Townsend and Doss Boot take you back to the untamed forests of early 20th-century Washington to explore the life, legend, and mysterious circumstances surrounding one of the American frontier's strangest figures.

Join us for another journey into the darker corners of American history, where the line between fact and folklore is often as difficult to find as the men who vanished into the wilderness.
