The Very Beginning—the Age of Chaos

In this series, we’ll journey back to the very dawn of existence, to discover the legendary tales of gods, heroes, and monsters.

Today, we begin at the very beginning—the age of Chaos.

In the Greek imagination, the universe did not start with light and order, but with a vast, formless void.
This void was called Chaos.
It had no shape, no boundaries, no sound. Chaos was not a being, but the endless nothingness from which everything could emerge.

From Chaos came the first deities.
Gaia, the Earth, broad and solid, became the foundation of all life and the ancestor of the Olympian gods.
Then followed Tartarus, the abyss—dark and bottomless, symbolizing the underworld.
And Eros, the god of love, the force of creation and fertility.

Soon, Night—Nyx—and Darkness—Erebus—also emerged.
From their union were born Aether, the god of light, and Hemera, the goddess of day.
For the first time, the world experienced day and night, and with it, the flow of time began.

Gaia played a vital role in shaping this new universe.
She gave birth to Uranus, the sky; Pontus, the sea; and Ourea, the mountains.
Thus, the heavens, the waters, and the earth were separated, and the first true world came into being.

From chaos to order, from nothingness to creation, the Age of the Gods had begun.

In the next episode, we’ll explore how Uranus, the sky god, rose to power as the first divine king, and how Gaia’s children set into motion the first struggles among the gods.
