As far as works of fiction go, the Harry Potter books are pretty mild.

Sure, the books do get a LITTLE bit darker as the story goes on..But you’d never go so far as to deem it SATANIC or something..Right?

Well, as it happens, many people DO think this way (I know, nuts), and ever since the first book hit the shelves in the late ‘90s, there have been waves of controversies surrounding the series—including some truly outrageous claims… Like Harry Potter being somehow synonymous with devil worship.

And that’s just one of these flagrant claims.

One asserts that the Harry Potter books act as an “open doorway that will put untold millions of kids into hell”

Another claims that that the books are “worse than rat poison mixed with orange soda”

And one religious figure even made the bold proclamation that: "Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of the darkness, the devil.”

These are REAL quotes.

But..Now the question is: Are these assertions substantiated in ANY WAY?

Today, we’re going to be tackling this topic head-on—unpacking why so many people believed Harry Potter served as a gateway to hell, what unfolded in the wake of these controversies, and why, despite all the backlash, the series not only survived…But became a global phenomenon.

I've done a lot of spell videos. The most powerful, the most dangerous, the hardest to cast, but one I've always wanted to make involves taking a look at the most... Messed up.

Not the deadliest. Not the flashiest. But the kind of spell that makes you question why someone would even invent it in the first place. 

Fortunately I've gone down the spell rabbit hole pretty deep- I've even made an entire video covering every single spell in the Wizarding World. So I've got a pretty solid grasp on the full spellbook.

Which is why today, we're shining a light on the most messed up, demented spells the Wizarding World has to offer�spells that exist to inflict pain, humiliation, and sometimes just pure, senseless suffering.

Instead of focusing on the obvious ones, my goal for this video will be to dig deeper into the cruel, obscure, and morally bankrupt curses, hexes, and jinxes that most of you probably haven't even heard of. 

But before we get stuck in, I do want to highlight one consideration: Sometimes, it's not about what the spell is inherently�it's about how it's used. Something that seems harmless on the outside�like a spell used to mend a broken teacup can quickly become a tool of torment in the wrong hands.

When navigating the Wizarding World through the perspective of a Muggle, there are a lot of things that might raise a few eyebrows.

Some in a morally dubious sense�and others simply because of how unbelievably astonishing they are.

But in my view, there is perhaps nothing more sinister or baffling than the notion of a love potion (and that's quite a statement given what's out there)

Think about it: it's a potion that you give to someone... and it makes them fall INVOLUNTARILY in love with you.

For just a second- consider the power you could have over someone with this- one sip from a potion and they're infatuated with you. And all of this only feels even more bizarre when you consider the fact that we're CONSTANTLY reminded of how POWERFUL the force of love truly is in the Wizarding World.

Yet... somehow, love can be bottled and sold? Like a trinket on a shop shelf in Diagon Alley.

Today we're going to be taking a closer look at LOVE potions in Harry Potter. HOW they're allowed to exist, HOW they work, and even a few theories on Why I think they might not be QUITE what we think they are- ONE of which involves the Weasley twins.

Since the books and films ended there really hasn't been much additional info published on the Wizarding World, which is why I felt the need to fill in that 27 year gap and provide some clarity on what sort of man Draco Malfoy became and what he did with his life.

After the dust settled and the battle with Voldemort came to an end, the Wizarding world was finally able to finally celebrate the triumph of good over evil. 

However, it also marked the beginning of an uncharted chapter in wizarding world history.

And because the books and films came to an end, we never gained much insight into what became of the places and characters that we grew to love.

We were given a brief epilogue that offered a TINY snippet of what their lives looked like 19 years later- but besides that..Nothing.

And this leaves a significant gap that remains largely unexplored, not to mention the many years that have passed since the epilogue.

Today I'm going to fill you in on what became of the titular character, Harry Potter- taking a look at what transpired in his life, and what sort of man he became.

Dumbledore and Voldemort are widely regarded as the pinnacle of magical power, standing at the very top of the wizarding hierarchy. Their mastery of spells, dueling prowess, and profound understanding of magic set them apart from nearly all other witches and wizards in history. 

While still just a boy, Dumbledore performed magic that his professors "had never seen before,", and in adulthood, he cemented his place as the most powerful wizard of his time, mastering disciplines of magic that others could barely comprehend.

Years later, Voldemort followed suit, displaying unnatural magical talent from a young age. Even before formal training, he could move objects, control animals, and manipulate the minds of others through sheer will. As an adult, Voldemort's magic became unmatched in both brutality and innovation. He pushed spellcraft to its limits and became the only known wizard to split his soul multiple times. 

It's fairly safe to say that these two were leaps and bounds ahead of their peers and entirely deserving of their reputations as two of the most powerful wizards in history.

But what if I told you that another wizard�one just as powerful, if not more so, than both of these men�once walked the very same halls of Hogwarts that they did, but somehow doesn't get nearly the same recognition?

Today we're going to be cracking this wide open and telling his story.

The Sacred Twenty-Eight is a "Pure-Blood Directory" published in the first half of the twentieth century that outlines the wizarding world's most pure-blooded magical families – which is to say, the witches and wizards whose ancestors had not "muddied" their blood lines with Muggle integration. 

Within the wizarding society, blood purity has been a longstanding source of division and prejudice, and the assertion that some wizarding families were more "pure" than others (because their bloodline remained purely magical) is not received well by most in Wizarding Society.

Regardless of this, pure-bloods believe they are somehow better�more powerful, more deserving�simply because their lineage has remained untouched by Muggle blood. And while many wizarding families (even some on the Sacred 28 list) reject this idea as outdated and elitist, many others, like the Malfoys and the Blacks, wear their pure-blood status like a badge of honour, ensuring that their family trees remain free of Muggle influence.

And the same can be said for many others on this list.

But if we dissect the Sacred Twenty-Eight more closely, there's something... odd about it, and it's the fact that the Weasleys are on the list.

Unlike the Malfoys, who openly embraced their pure-blood superiority, the Weasleys are known for their progressive attitudes�welcoming half-bloods, Muggle-borns, and even Muggles themselves. They openly reject pure-blood supremacy, and yet... their family history, even as recent as Molly and Arthur, tells a different story. Is it possible that the Weasleys are simply no better than the families they claim to be so different from? Have they, for generations, quietly upheld the very same pure-blood traditions they claim to despise�just in a less obvious way?

Today we're going to be unpacking the Weasley's dirty dark secret.

Magic is displayed (at a MINIMUM) by the time the witch or wizard reaches eleven years old, otherwise known as Hogwarts age.

But..Can magic be stripped away just as quickly as it manifests? Can one who finds themselves accustomed to their magical capabilities be then reduced to what is effectively a..Squib?

Last week I made a video outlining the 10 most powerful wizards of all time. And that video followed a whole bunch of other power ranking videos I've done in the past- most powerful Death eaters, Aurors etc. 

Anyway, in the last video I noticed quite a few people commenting that they wanted me to do the SAME for witches. 

I left witches out of the last video intentionally because they deserve a dedicated ranking of their own. So today, we're going to be taking a look at the 10 most POWERFUL witches of all time, diving into the history books and seeing who is worthy of a spot on this list. One thing that's always dawned on me is how shocking it must be for the parents of muggleborns to receive news of the magical world. And as if coming to terms with the existence of an entire magical world isn't difficult enough already, they're then expected to entrust the safety of their children to a bunch of complete strangers in a world that they not only have no understanding of, but have also just been introduced to.

Oh, and let's not forget the cherry on top: once your child leaves, you're expected to keep the whole thing a secret. Don't tell your friends, your neighbors, or anyone else�because the magical world doesn't exist as far as the rest of society is concerned.

Given how difficult it must be for the parents of muggle-born students to come to terms with this reality, I'd be willing to bet that there has been more than one instance of parents REFUSING (at least, initially) to send their child to the school. After all, what GOOD parent wouldn't worry about sending their child off to an unfamiliar, hidden world filled with unknown dangers and rules they don't understand? 

I know my mum would take issue...At least, until she learns a bit more about it.

Therefore, today I want to discuss the topic of parents REFUSING to send their children to Hogwarts: unpacking whether it's possible to actually refuse, and if they do, taking a look at the what the future might hold for their magical child.

Hey everyone, Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing The Philosopher's Stone, Hogwarts professor Quirinus Quirrell, Lord Voldemort, and of course- Harry Potter.

After returning home from his trip, Quirrell didn't reprise his previous role of Muggle Studies professor; instead, he had been given the coveted position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor�a subject that had been notoriously cursed for years. And although Dumbledore, ever watchful, was wary of Quirrell's drastic transformation, he lacked concrete evidence and thus permitted the young professor to carry out his duties.

And the year Quirrell assumed the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor coincidentally aligned with Harry Potter's first year at Hogwarts. Very early on in Harry's magical adventures, he stops at the Leaky Cauldron with Hagrid, where he has his first encounter with Quirrell�a meeting that, at the time, seemed unremarkable but would later prove to be far more significant.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing Veritaserum- an incredibly powerful (and I feel, underutilized) potion that forces individuals to reveal the truth.

"It is Veritaserum � a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear. Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips � right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then, Potter... then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not."

Besides maybe Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and Amortentia- I feel as though Veritaserum AKA 'Truth' Serum is one of the most powerful potions in the entire Wizarding World. And given this fact, I can't help but notice that it's ludicrously underutilized (at least in the series).

Durmstrang's true 'claim to fame' or rather 'notorious hallmark' was one of its former pupils: Gellert Grindelwald. Grindelwald permanently stained the school's reputation by pushing the boundaries of dark magic even FURTHER than the school permitted, eventually being expelled for 'twisted, dark experiments' and 'near-fatal attacks' on students.

But what exactly did Gellert Grindelwald do? Durmstrang was notorious for allowing its students to explore the darker side of magic..How far did he really push that boundary?

As these attacks and experiments were never explored in detail, today I'm going to be taking a look at a few theories.

According to Hermione's research, there are only 7 known Animagi from the last CENTURY. In fact, the ability is SO RARE that those who are able to successfully become an Animagus are required to register with the ministry. 

So..My question is: WHY are there so few? How is it that this powerful ability is so underutilized in wizarding society? And what happens to those who have tried and FAILED?

But perhaps most importantly: Why haven't the most powerful and gifted wizards like Voldemort and Dumbledore attempted it? Or..Have they?

HOWEVER, today I'm going to be putting the spotlight on some of these omitted storylines (some big, some small) from the books, giving them the screen time they deserve. On October 31st 1981, Lord Voldemort walked through the doors of the Potter cottage in Godric's Hollow for the first time. But what should have been a seemingly straightforward mission for a powerful wizard at the height of his power ended up being a catastrophic event for both parties. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing RETCONS- specifically, all of the RETCONS made by JK Rowling after the Harry Potter series had ended.

I should start off by making a clear distinction between what retcon USED to mean and what it means now, because somehow the term has evolved over time into something else altogether. Depending on which version of 'Retcon' you subscribe to, you're going to have very different expectations for this list.

The ORIGINAL interpretation of Retcon, which stands for 'Retroactive Continuity', referred broadly to adding new information to previously told stories to expand or reinterpret the narrative. A good example of this would be JK Rowling revealing (through extended publications) that Witches and wizards VANISHED THEIR POOP via magic before the Hogwarts plumbing system came into effect.-

And the more commonly understood modern definition of retcon refers specifically to changes that contradict previously established facts in the narrative, whether intentional or unintentional.

The distinction here is that this interpretation places an emphasis on these new facts conflicting with existing canon.

A third definition I found online seems to support either:

'a literary device in which facts in the world of a fictional work that have been established through the narrative itself are adjusted, ignored, supplemented, or contradicted by a subsequently published work that recontextualizes or breaks continuity with the former.'

But for the sake of today's video, we're going to separate them, first placing our sights on works that CONTRADICT the source material, then shifting our perspective to more recently introduced content that SUPPLEMENTS the source material (but doesn't change it).

There are quite a few mistakes and plot holes in the Harry Potter books and films. In fact, there are enough for me to make several compilations of them. However, perhaps one of the most confusing and inconsistent elements of the Wizarding World is undoubtedly the 'Trace'- a fairly major plot component that is riddled with contradictions.-

To the Harry Potter casual, these issues with the Trace probably went by relatively unnoticed, but for the die-hards, it was hard to ignore the glaringly obvious ways in which the trace was misrepresented. There are also many components of the trace that are never explained- like how it is actually applied to underage witches and wizards.

Today, we'll be diving deep into the Trace�exploring what it is, how it's applied to children, and, through examples from the books and films, uncovering why this concept is essentially a total trainwreck. We'll also be looking at the trace from a more SINISTER perspective via one of my theories.

From the moment HBO's new Harry Potter TV Series was announced in April of 2023, fans of the series have been buzzing with questions and excitement. Questions like..What will the series be about? Will it stay true to the original books? And most importantly, who will be in charge of the project?

And since then, a lot of these questions have been answered.-

But perhaps the biggest lingering question mark surrounding the series pertains to casting. Because you see, so much of the Harry Potter films success was a direct result of the incredible casting decisions that were made.-

For many of the roles it's almost impossible to imagine ANYONE else undertaking them. But..Showrunners for the upcoming series have the behemoth task of finding people anyway.

Back in September an open casting call was announced for 3 of the most important characters in the series- Harry, Ron and Hermione. And for these roles, I can almost certainly tell you that it will be relatively unknown actors that end up taking on the characters. But besides these 3, there are a few other massively important roles that are central to the series..Like, oh I don't know- ALBUS DUMBLEDORE.

And as it turns out, the studio already has someone in mind.

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory.

In what seems like just the last couple of years (but in reality has spanned nearly a DECADE), Warner Bros. has faced some challenges when releasing new Harry Potter IP- particularly the "Fantastic Beasts" film series. These high-budget films which dropped in 2016, 2018, and 2022 respectively struggled to find traction at the global box office and didn't quite hit the mark for most fans. And for these reasons, it's unlikely that the Fantastic Beasts films will ever continue, stopping 2 films shy of the 5 film projection originally provided.-

However, Warner Bros. found a bright spot in 2023 with the release of Hogwarts Legacy, which seemed to really strike a chord with Harry Potter fans worldwide. The game topped sales charts as the best-selling game of 2023 across ALL platforms and ALL genres- beating out Call of Duty, Madden, Zelda, Diablo and more. And since the game's release over 30 MILLION copies have been sold.

Encouraged by this success, Warner Bros. Games released Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions in August, remastered the Lego Harry Potter game collection, and granted licenses for several new mobile games.

But the biggest bit of news is that a Hogwarts Legacy SEQUEL has apparently become a 'very big priority'.

These are just a few examples of the kinds of objects that I would use if I was in the position to create my own Horcruxes...And I'm sure the same can be said for a lot of you.

Why? Well.. They're small, hard-to-locate, and perhaps most important of all: meaningless.

But somehow, Voldemort missed the memo here, and instead chose objects that were eventually linked back to him.

So..The obvious questions here are...WHY was Voldemort so particular in his selection process for potential Horcruxes? And why didn't he choose things that would be virtually impossible to find? After all, had he done what seems so obvious, to pick meaningless inanimate objects, he may still be ruling over the Wizarding World.

The introduction of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1692 marked a pivotal moment in Wizarding history.-It put a stop to the witch hunts and unjust persecution of witches and wizards. It ushered in an era of harmonious co-existence.

And most importantly, it separated the two worlds: muggle and magical.

But what IF there was a darker element to the statute that has never been properly explored?- an element that concerned the muggles beyond the primary separation of the two worlds? What if the statute, and the subsequent formation of the Ministry of Magic- marked the dawn of an era wherein wizardkind stealthily wielded control over the non-magical world, deftly manipulating it from the concealed depths of the shadows?

I should also mention that I'm not making this video to CRITICIZE the books, but rather, take a look out of my own curiosity. Authors are only human and nearly every book series has mistakes like these made in them.

Rowling has even addressed this topic herself:

"As obsessive fans will tell you, I do slip up! Several classrooms move floors mysteriously between books and these are the least serious continuity errors! Most of the fansites will point you in the direction of my mistakes. But the essentials remain consistent from book to book because the story has been plotted for a long time and it is clear in my mind."

At the time of writing this, Ollivander's Wand Shop has been supplying the wizarding community with the finest wands money can buy for nearly 24 centuries, having first opened its doors as far back as 382 BC. I know I know, this date DOES seem a little far-fetched, but rest assured that it has been confirmed as canon.

And it was during that year that the original 'Ollivander', the ancestor of Garrick Ollivander, was thought to have come from a Mediterranean country in Roman times and set up a stall in what would eventually become Diagon Alley.-

The Ollivander family quickly revolutionized wand making when they publicly forsook the traditional wand-making process, which previously had witches and wizards procure their own wand core. Ollivander believed that this process produced wands that were 'inferior' in quality and performance, which led to the family procuring all wand components for future customers.

At this point, the Ollivander of the time began his quest to discover the finest wand cores and the wand woods that best complemented them.

And from this point onward, the purchaser would no longer select a wand of THEIR choosing- and instead began the tradition of the WAND choosing the wizard.

In theory, this is a nice idea which ensures that each witch or wizard is paired with a wand perfect just for them. It also portrays the Ollivander family as genuinely caring for their customers' best interests in the name of passionate wand-making.

But I think there's a lot more to this business model than meets the eye, and I think that I've got some compelling evidence to suggest that there are seriously dark undertones to the wand industry.

I question the Harry Potter books A LOT.

But there's one thing in particular that I've always more or less accepted at face value with no regard for HOW it actually unfolds. And that THING is HOW the Ministry (and others) communicates with what are essentially amortal wraithlike spirits that (as far as I know) do NOT possess the ability to speak. I'm of course talking about DEMENTORS.

Adding even more mystery to this question is the fact that underneath that hood of theirs the Dementors have a HOLE where their mouth is supposed to be (along with some black holes for eyes).-

We know that the Ministry of Magic controls them (to some extent), but I suppose you could argue that this is an unspoken arrangement whereby Dementors are allowed to THRIVE at Azkaban Prison in exchange for relative 'peace' between the two factions.

But as it happens, there are passages from the books which STRONGLY suggest Dementors relayed information to Fudge & The Ministry..In The form of WORDS strung together.

Therefore, today I want to tackle the question of..CAN Dementors speak. And equally as important, HOW?

On the surface, Azkaban seems like a pretty good idea- mainly due to its effectiveness. It's on a far-off remote island, it has a fortress designed to keep the most dangerous criminals at bay, there are perpetual storms surrounding the island, AND there's an army of Dementors working as prison guards.-

And that's just the PHYSICAL side of things. Mentally, the prison is an absolute nightmare. The crashing waves and howling winds serve as a natural barrier, isolating the inmates from the world they once terrorized.

The Dementors, with their shadowy forms, siphon hope and happiness from every soul they encounter. And those who enter Azkaban often leave something behind�pieces of their sanity, their will to fight, and sometimes even their humanity.

And all of this is just about borderline acceptable if we consider that it's meant to house murderers, dark wizards and those who have committed unspeakable acts against others.

But the major issue here is that Azkaban is one of the ONLY Wizarding Prisons in Britain. And what this means is that perpetrators of more MINOR crimes, and in some cases those who have been wrongly convicted, are unjustly sent in to this hell-hole along with the rest of them.-

It hardly seems appropriate that someone convicted for say, theft, would endure what is essentially the same punishment as someone who has murdered.

This raises a whole plethora of questions about wizarding society as a whole, but the one we're going to start with is: WHY one gigantic horrible prison? Why not a network of smaller, more humane facilities that focus on rehabilitation rather than sheer punishment?-

Blood status has been a controversial and longstanding source of division and prejudice in the Wizarding World, and it all stems from the categorization of magical bloodlines into pure-bloods, half-bloods, and muggle-borns.

And while I don't condone demonizing any of these groups and certainly don't want to contribute to further prejudice, I can't help but wonder if there are actual physiological differences between them�beyond just their blood, of course.

Voldemort's stance on blood purity is an unusual one, as despite being a half-blood himself, he condemned anyone that wasn't pure of blood. This becomes increasingly confusing when considered in tandem with his own ego, as he hardly seems like the type of person to undermine his own identity.

At first glance his hatred and prejudice towards other groups seems like completely blind and-baseless discrimination, but if we consider that his ultimate goal undermines his OWN identity, perhaps it tells us that he genuinely perceived qualities in pure-bloods that he felt were essential for true magical prowess.-

The legend of the Deathly Hallows is one of the most well-known stories in the wizarding world. With Back to Hogwarts Day fast approaching, I started thinking about all of the young witches and wizards that will experience the Wizarding World for the first time. For many of them, it'll be their first time at platform 9 ¾, first time on the Hogwarts Express, and first time walking through the front doors of Hogwarts school.

But one key aspect of this integration process that got me thinking pertains to none other than the Sorting Hat. Shortly after entering the Great Hall, each of these new first year students will be required to place the fabled hat upon their head.

And the Hat, which has the unique and essential task of assigning new students to one of the four houses, will place this new student in to Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin.

For the most part, this process runs pretty smoothly, with students being sorted across the board.

But what if for some strange reason, things didn't go quite as smoothly as they usually do? What if the Sorting process led to a completely disproportionate number of students in one house? Or better yet, what if one or more houses had no new students at all?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the many reasons why Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, famed Headmaster of Hogwarts and former Gryffindor student, may have been more well-suited to Slytherin House.

As fans, soon after Harry Potter received his letter of acceptance and we were first introduced to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, we also learned about the magical institution's four founding members and how they decided that the student population would always be divided into four houses, which would represent the characteristics and traits most valued by each of those founding members. As the majority of you watching this will already know, the four founding members of Hogwarts School were Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, with the corresponding houses being named after each of their surnames. And while later instalments of the series eventually focused on students from the houses of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, the beginning of Harry Potter certainly had a lot more emphasis on Gryffindor and Slytherin. What's more, there was a very obvious dichotomy presented between the two, with all of the protagonist characters�aka the "good guys"�being Gryffindors, and all of the antagonists�or "bad guys"�being Slytherins. From Harry to the compassionate and friendly Weasley family who helped him find Platform 9 and ¾, and the world-famous Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, everyone who was presented as good and heroic in the first few years of Harry's time at Hogwarts was a current or former Gryffindor student. By contrast, each of the BADDIES that we met during Harry's first few years were all Slytherins, including the bully Draco Malfoy, the cruel Professor Snape and, of course, the most evil wizard to have ever lived�Lord Voldemort. And who could forget what Hagrid told Harry before he entered his first year at Hogwarts:

Goblins and wizards have never exactly seen eye to eye...Literally and figuratively. The short-statured humanoid creatures have long since been the subject of considerable prejudice within the Wizarding World, with Wizardkind often looking down on them both physically and socially.-

And it's this discriminatory attitude that has led to tension and conflict over the centuries, as well as widespread mistrust and misunderstanding.

Even the most progressive members of the wizarding world felt a general mistrust for the tiny, monstrous humanoid-creatures, and their position within society reflected this negative attitude towards them.

But this totally undeserved treatment of Goblins wasn't met with silence. You see, over the years the Goblins have gotten together on a few occasions and rebelled- hoping for just one basic and reasonable outcome: to be treated with equal respect.

However, these attempts at being recognized by wizardkind fell on deaf ears, with wizardkind's prejudice toward the creatures prevailing on nearly every occasion.

For many years Goblins accepted their fate. They were allowed Gringotts, and they were given a number of rights in the Wizarding World. But they still weren't considered EQUALS, and the fact that their rebellions would fail time after time meant that EVENTUALLY a different approach would have to be taken. In fact, things just seemed to get worse for Goblins with each subsequent rebellion.

The rebellions were violent, but ultimately their goal was always equality.

But after enough time had passed, enough was enough, and ushered in was a new era of Goblins that had shifted their mindset. They no longer wanted to just be 'equal'- they wanted to be BETTER. They wanted to supplant Wizardkind as the dominant race of the magical world.

And spearheading that moment was the most DANGEROUS goblin to shape wizarding history and the subject of today's episode.

Have you ever wondered why the witches and wizards of new are so..WEAK? The Hogwarts founders from the 10th century were supposed to have been 4 of the most skilled witches and wizards that the magical world had ever seen, with proof of this being the impressive magical institution they left behind.

Then of course there's Merlin - another 10th century wizard that is supposed to have been the most powerful wizard of all time and was aptly named 'The Prince of Enchanters'.

And a few centuries after that came the Peverell brothers, a trio of brothers who in Dumbledore's own words were 'gifted, dangerous wizards who succeeded in creating those powerful objects' - those 'objects' of course being the fabled Deathly Hallows.

And in the 14th century along came Nicolas Flamel who made Wizarding History by creating perhaps the most powerful magical object of all time- the Philosopher's Stone.

When people talk about witches and wizards of the past, it's as though they were so powerful that they are entirely 'uncomparable' to most modern day witches and wizards.-

In the modern era we've got powerful wizards like Voldemort and Dumbledore..But they sort of seem like exceptions to the rule. It doesn't seem like they're TRUE outliers, but instead that they more or less represent the level of power that wizards SHOULD have..or Perhaps..ONCE had.

So my question is..What happened?

Why are witches and wizards so much weaker than they were in centuries prior? Is it all the butterbeer?-

In the Goblet of Fire we are introduced to schools outside of Hogwarts for the first time. And while Hogwarts remains a top choice for many aspiring witches and wizards, the truth is that there exists a VAST world of magical education beyond the familiar walls of Hogwarts. There may not be as many options as say..Muggle schools..That much is obvious, but according to JK Rowling there are actually 11 major wizarding schools worldwide.

"The number of countries that have their own magical school is minuscule compared to those that do not.-This is because the wizarding populations of most countries choose the option of home-schooling.-Occasionally, too, the magical community in a given country is tiny or far-flung and correspondence courses have been found a more cost-effective means of educating the young.

"There are eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide, all of which are registered with the International Confederation of Wizards. Anyone wishing to know whether there is an approved magical school in their region should address an owl enquiry to the International Confederation of Wizards, Educational Office."

During the primary Harry Potter books we learn about a couple of these schools like Durmtrang and Beauxbatons. And in the Fantastic Beasts series we learn a fair bit about a wizarding school in AMERICA named Ilvermorny.

But.. What about the other 7?-

As of writing this, only EIGHT of the 11 major wizarding schools mentioned by Rowling have been confirmed, which leaves the door wide open for speculation. She first introduced the figure of '11' schools back in 2016, but for reasons unknown has yet to name the 3 'mystery' schools.-

So, where ARE these 3 unidentified schools? What language do they speak? And what sort of magic do they specialize in?

To say that the Harry Potter books and films ended a long time ago would be a severe understatement. As of writing this, it's been a whopping 27 years since the Philosopher's Stone was first published, and 13 years since the last Harry Potter film hit the silver screen.

And while I feel that both mediums sufficiently developed the characters/story, reading the last few pages of the final book left me longing for more. We got so much! Yet...It still feels like we didn't get enough.

When we think of WEALTHY individuals from the Harry Potter story there are a few people and/or wizarding families that come to mind.-

First and foremost: The Malfoys- a wealthy, pureblood wizarding family known for their influence in the wizarding world and their affiliation with dark magic. The Malfoys built their immense wealth in 1066 when their distant ancestor, Armand Malfoy, arrived in England with William the Conqueror.

Next up, we've got the Lestranges�another wealthy pureblood family whose immense generational wealth only doubled upon intermarriage with another pureblood family, the Blacks.-

"The old goblin obeyed, pressing his palm to the wood, and the door of the vault melted away to reveal a cave-like opening crammed from floor to ceiling with golden coins and goblets, silver armour, skins of strange creatures, and a skull still wearing it's crown."

And finally we've got the Potters. Harry Potter's wealth in the Harry Potter story is certainly no secret- and we're exposed to it as early as the Philosopher's Stone- when we're first introduced to vault 687 at Gringotts. Harry has piles and piles of gold- and his immense wealth is mentioned time and time again throughout the Harry Potter story.

As it turns out, the Potter family fortune started with the founding Patriarch of the family, Linfred of Stinchcombe, a revolutionary potioner that began to amass riches in the Potter name. Following him in the family business was Fleamont Potter, Harry's grandfather, who had all sorts of success of his own.

And it seems like these few wizarding families, who touted generational wealth that had been amassed by their ancestors before them, are the only examples of 'rich' wizarding families in the Harry Potter story.-

But what if I told you that there was a man out there FAR wealthier than all of these families COMBINED...AND that he lived in a run-down old shack on the Hogwarts grounds.

Enter: Rubeus Hagrid.

Of the various Dark Wizards that have stained Wizarding History, very few have been able to perform the most sadistic of magical rituals: Horcrux creation. In fact, of the long list of dark wizards that have plagued the Wizarding World at large, only 2 or 3 names are known to have successfully created Horcruxes. The most infamous (and obvious) name that comes to mind is Lord Voldemort, who created more Horcruxes than anyone else in Wizarding history.-

The next name that comes to mind is Owle Bullock, a wizard who I just recently made a video on. In that video, I theorized that Owle, who authored 'Secrets of the Darkest Art'- a book containing any and all information ABOUT Horcruxes, was actually the ORIGINAL Horcrux creator.

And the final (and confirmed) Horcrux creator was a wizard by the name of Herpo the Foul- a powerful ancient Wizard that hailed from Greece.

But one thing I've never really gotten in to is WHAT HAPPENED to the Horcruxes of these other Horcrux creators. Voldemort's Horcruxes were destroyed, we know that much.

But what about Herpo?

If a Horcrux makes you immortal and anchors you to the world of the living, then it could mean that somewhere out there Herpo the Foul...Still exists.

You guys have been asking for it so here it is. Today we're going to be diving in to WHAT Herpo the Foul's Horcrux is, WHERE it is, and whether or not Herpo, one of the most powerful practitioners of dark magic to ever live, is still out there.

Rubeus Hagrid's FIRST wand was rather bendy, 16" long and made of oak. It has been expressed that those with oak wands usually have an 'affinity with the magic of the natural world', that a 'bendy' wand signifies a high level of adaptability in personality, and that the significant length of his wand is representative of his large stature and enormous personality.-

You can tell a lot about a person from their wand.

But if you met Hagrid as an adult, you'd just have to GUESS these things about him, because the Hagrid WE KNOW walks around with an umbrella.

Of course, there's more to Hagrid's umbrella wand than meets the eye, but the fact remains that HAGRID does not carry a wand in the traditional sense- the main reason being that his wand was SNAPPED while he was still just a boy.

During his third year at Hogwarts, Hagrid was falsely accused by Tom Riddle to have released a monstrous creature on the school that killed a Muggle-born witch named Myrtle Warren. And as a result of this, his wand was destroyed by the British Ministry of Magic.

But the actions taken towards Hagrid always seemed EXTREME and INCONSISTENT.-

Because there was insufficient evidence to prosecute Hagrid, he avoided Azkaban (at least the first time around). But he still somehow landed himself an expulsion from Hogwarts and a snapped wand.

In the Philosopher's Stone, Hagrid famously remarked that "There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin.".-

But..There are a few big issues with this statement.

First of all, it's factually incorrect. While the vast majority of the dark witches and wizards in the wizarding world were indeed at one time Slytherin students, it certainly wasn't all of them.-

Second of all, many have interpreted Hagrid's statement to mean: 'all Slytherins will become evil', when what Hagrid really meant was that 'all bad witches and wizards ORIGINATED from Slytherin. Which is..Also not true.

I will admit that when you think about all of the evil in the Wizarding World, it is certainly hard to distance your mind from the green and silver house. However, in reality there are numerous other examples of BAD wizards that came from well...ALL of the other houses.

Think about it.

We had Pettigrew from Gryffindor.

We had Quirrell from Ravenclaw.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing BOOKS vs FILMS - honing in on some of the darkest BOOK moments that, for varying reasons, simply never made their way onto the silver screen.

While the film adaptations brought the magic of Hogwarts to life on the big screen, they were not without their limitations. In the process of adapting the complex and intricate world of the books into a more visually-driven medium, certain dark and unsettling moments were omitted or altered, leaving fans with a somewhat diluted version of Rowling's original vision.

These were moments so dark that (in the case of some) they had to be removed in order to keep the film's PG rating down.-

Today, we'll delve into these dark moments left out of the films, exploring the reasons behind their omissions and the impact of these changes on the overall story.

For anyone who's read or watched the Harry Potter series, the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are common knowledge. Based on the four founding members of the school, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, the houses reflect the strengths, qualities, and beliefs of these witches and wizards, with each of the four houses being named after their respective founder.-

Those sorted into Gryffindor house value bravery and courage. Hufflepuff students believe in loyalty, patience and fair play. Ravenclaw witches and wizards, on the other hand, are committed to intellect and wisdom. And, lastly, Slytherin house welcomes students with immense ambition and cunning.

From almost the immediate beginning of the series, fans are led to believe that these four houses play an immensely important role in the future and identity of the witches and wizards who attend school there.

The descendants of a LONG line of pure-blood wizards, the Malfoys have long pulled the monetary puppet strings, playing a significant role in shaping the power dynamics and societal norms within the magical community.

From their impressive ancestral home to their penchant for dark magic and discriminatory ideologies, it's safe to say that the Malfoys have left an indelible and controversial mark on the wizarding world.

Come to think of it..Stain might be a better word to use.

HOWEVER, despite being a fan favorite, Dobby was severely underrepresented in the films, and actually had a much larger presence in the books.-

The First major Wizarding War in the Harry Potter universe was a catastrophic period in wizarding history that lasted a whopping 11 years. The war started when Voldemort, obsessed with pure-blood supremacy, sought to overthrow the existing magical order and establish himself as the ruler of both the wizarding and non-magical worlds.

The war officially ended on October 31, 1981, when Voldemort's curse to kill the infant Harry Potter rebounded upon him, destroying his physical form and rendering him powerless.

And the aftermath of this decade long conflict left deep scars on the wizarding world. Families were torn apart, and many prominent witches and wizards lost their lives. The wizarding world was in shambles.

But as far as the 7 books are concerned, the primary focus is on the SECOND Wizarding War, a conflict that only lasted 3 years.

These are just a handful of the absurd theories I’ve seen posted online, and for the most part I try to center this channel around ‘good’ theories. At least, that’s the goal.

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing the Wizarding World in the modern era.-

It's been 26 prosperous years since Lord Voldemort made his final stand at the Battle of Hogwarts, finally meeting his end on May 2nd of 1998.-

And since that time, the MUGGLE world has changed a whole lot. The Internet has become mainstream, smartphones are prolific, communication is instant and everything is online. And if we consider how much the MUGGLE world has developed since the late 90s, I'd wager that the Wizarding World has undergone something similar.

I think that, since the momentous day that marked Voldemort's defeat, the Wizarding World has undergone a significant amount of change. Firstly, because they haven't a dark threat to deal with in MANY years, and secondly because technology (even wizarding technology) develops exponentially.

The First Wizarding War ran from 1970-1981, and the Second Wizarding War ran from 1995-1998, which MEANS that this is the longest period of time (for quite some time) that the Wizarding World has been able to exist in relative peace.

And with the focus shifting from dark threats to societal development, things can evolve pretty quickly. Just like a phoenix, wizarding society rose from the ashes and emerged from the second wizarding war stronger than ever.

But what I want to discuss today is another unspoken element of Horcrux creation that’s never been properly touched on..A SECRET from Voldemort’s past that may very well provide answers to some of the DARKEST questions related to Voldemort’s quest for immortality.

This was what Lucius Malfoy began to utter upon the realization that he had just lost his House Elf servant, Dobby.

Fortunately, he never got to complete what he was trying to say, and I suspect that if he HAD been able to complete the incantation of what we can only assume was meant to be 'Avada Kedavra', it would have had disastrous consequences.

But why was Lucius Malfoy uttering Killing Curses outside of the Headmasters office in the halls of Hogwarts? What was going through his head? And more importantly- who was he trying to kill? Conventional wisdom would suggest that Lucius raised his wand to assassinate Harry, the insolent boy who had just lost him his house elf companion.-

But I'm not sure it was quite that simple.

"I thought he would come," said Voldemort in his high, clear voice, his eyes on the leaping flames. "I expected him to come."

These were the words ushered from Voldemort’s mouth just moments before Harry Potter met his apparent demise. In this moment, Harry had made the choice to sacrifice himself in order to protect his friends- exchanging his own life for the safety of every other witch and wizard who bravely fought against Voldemort’s forces.

And for a little while, it looked as though this may have been the end for Harry. Unlike his previous confrontations with Voldemort– like his meeting with a fragmented Voldemort attached to Professor Quirrell, or their duel in the graveyard of Little Hangleton – this time Harry had come forward without any intentions to fight back. He came to die.

Of course we later find out that Harry, who stared death right in the face, eventually survives. But what I want to discuss today is HOW he survives.

If we go by Harry Potter canon, there are several explanations that shed light on how Harry manages to survive, and we owe our gratitude to Dumbledore for providing us with answers to these sorts of questions.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. The first encounter between Albus Dumbledore and Tom Riddle was in 1938, when Dumbledore visits Wool's Orphanage to offer Tom a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During their meeting, Dumbledore informs Tom about the existence of the wizarding world and his magical heritage, and Tom, who had already sensed his own powers, is intrigued by the prospect of attending Hogwarts.-

At the time, Tom was an 11-year-old orphan who had exhibited signs of magical abilities, but he was also known for his manipulative and cruel behavior towards the other chi*ldren at the orphanage. On the outside, Tom looked fairly innocuous, but underneath was a brooding dark force that would stop at nothing to cause pain and suffering to others.

This encounter between Dumbledore and Tom Riddle is significant, because it marks the beginning of their complex relationship throughout the series. It also highlights Dumbledore's role in the early life of one of the most dangerous dark wizards in history.

Right from the very beginning, from their very first encounter, Dumbledore was cautious and wary of the young boy- sensing Tom's dark nature and potential for evil. Despite all of the warning signs, however, Dumbledore proceeds to offer Tom a place at Hogwarts- hoping that the school and new environment would help shift Tom's life in a more positive direction.

All of this is shown to Harry via the pensieve, the purpose of which was to give Harry a sense of context for the task that he would later give him, and the memories that he would later show him. He wanted to give Harry an idea of the troubled boy that lord Voldemort once was, show him that Tom Riddle was once a student much like him, and show him how his path of darkness began.-

But my question is: how did Dumbledore, who we are led to believe is particularly intelligent and strategic, suffer such a massive oversight in assessing Tom Riddle's nature?

Horcruxes, said to be one of two things from the Harry Potter books that made JK Rowling's editor nearly VOMIT, are still very much an enigma to this day. The very first known Horcrux was made in Ancient Greece by a wizard named Herpo the Foul, and thousands of years later, Voldemort became only the second known creator of a Horcrux. Made from magic that is so terrible in nature that even dark wizards are horrified by what it entails, Horcruxes are creations that are unimaginable to the vast majority of the Wizarding World. So, when Voldemort made seven, it was a demonstration of just how incredibly evil he was. When interviewed on the topic, even JK Rowling stumbled her words as to avoid revealing its process directly.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be taking a look at five Draco Malfoy theories that have recently caught my eye.-

To start, I'd like to acknowledge that there are loads of debates out there between fans as to whether Malfoy was a redeemable character or not. There seems to be two very distinct camps – one that believes Draco was a snake at the beginning of the series, and an even bigger snake at the end; and another that believes he was simply brought up in an environment of hate but was really a good person. The latter of these two groups, suggests that there is a very obvious character arc and redeeming storyline that Draco goes through in the latter half of the series. I must admit that I'm somewhat with the second group of fans in my beliefs regarding Malfoy. Sure, he was a pompous pureblood that did terrible things to Harry and his friends in their youth. But these terrible things were always done with juvenile intent. For example, in The Philosopher's Stone, Draco was responsible for tricking Harry into thinking he was going to fight Malfoy in a midnight duel. BUT his true intention in challenging Harry was to have him found outside of bed, running around the castle after hours – something which would have resulted in Harry's expulsion. EXPULSION – not death – not even harm. So, I imagine you take my meaning. Draco seemed to hate Harry but not to the point that he would cause him actual harm – at least as an 11-year-old boy. Of course, later in the series, there are many times in which Draco is presented with the opportunity to bring harm to Harry – such as when he was asked to identify if a very badly stung Harry was indeed THE Harry Potter. This happens at Malfoy Manor in The Deathly Hallows after a group of snatchers find Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the woods and they use a charm to puff up Harry's face beyond the point of recognizability. Of course, the snatchers suspect it's Harry, his lightning-bolt scar mainly to blame. But when Draco, home from school on holiday, is asked to confirm that the puffy-faced, adolescent wizard IS THE Harry Potter, he falters. He knows it's Harry – we know he knows. But he does not confirm it to his father, Lucius, even though it would've brought the Malfoy family back into great favour with the Dark Lord, because Draco knows that if he were to identify Harry as HARRY, he would've been killed. This is one of the MOST telling moments into the true nature of Draco Malfoy. And, so, it's with this perspective that I'll be taking you through today's theories on Mr. Malfoy.

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory.

We know that in November of 1945, Dumbledore achieved the impossible by defeating the notorious (and Elder Wand wielding) dark wizard at large- Gellert Grindelwald.

For decades, Grindelwald had been building his following and spreading his poisonous ideologies, disrupting the Wizarding World in a way unlike any other wizard before. His goal was simple: to establish a new world order where wizards would reign supreme over Muggles. His ideologies, promoted segregation, discrimination, and violence, instilling fear and chaos in thw eyes of many. And for a long time, it looked as though Grindelwald's twisted perspectives were gaining traction..

That is, until Albus Dumbledore stepped in.

We also know that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel of 'Legendary Proportions' that is widely perceived to have been the most legendary duel of all Wizarding history.

"They say, still, that no Wizarding duel ever matched that between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in 1945. Those who witnessed it have written of the terror and the awe they felt as they watched these two extraordinary wizards do battle. Dumbledore's triumph, and its consequences for the Wizarding world, are considered a turning point in magical history."

But one question that's never quite been properly answered by the history books is...HOW? How did Dumbledore defeat Grindelwald?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be diving in to the lives of the fabled trio, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley AFTER the events of the final book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

After the dust settled and the battle with Voldemort came to an end, the Wizarding world celebrated the triumph of good over evil. Voldemort's downfall had a profound impact on the Wizarding world, effectively bringing an end to a dark era characterized by the absence of hope and replacing it with a renewed sense of optimism.

However, it also marked the beginning of an uncharted chapter in wizarding world history.

And because the books and films ended, we never really got many insights in to HOW the Wizarding World rebuilt itself. And more specific to todays' topic, we weren't given any further information on what the lives of our beloved trio looked like in the aftermath of the war.

We were given a brief epilogue that gave us a GLIMPSE in to their lives 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts- but besides that, nothing else. All we get to see are the main characters gathered at Platform 9¾ as they see off their own children to Hogwarts.

But this leaves a pretty large gap in time- 19 years to be exact- that's relatively uncharted.

Today, I'd like to provide you with some information on what transpired with the trio during these relatively unexplored two decades following the war. From their personal to their professional lives, this video is going to cover it all.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today I've got a theory for you which exposes Dumbledore's TRUE motivations for the school's Defence Against the Dark Arts posting.

Severus Snape became the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor during Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts. And in theory, he was perfect for the position. He had a profound understanding of both sides of the magical spectrum, and knew more about the dark arts than most- making him the perfect candidate to teach students all about it.

So..Why didn't he assume the role SOONER? If Snape was so perfect for it- why couldn't he just have the job? Why did he have to wait until Harry was in his sixth year? Why did we have to first go through Quirrell, Lockhart, Lupin, Fake Moody and Umbridge before SNAPE got his chance? The answer may be more complicated than you think.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing a well-known Hogwarts artefact known as the Mirror of Erised. Specifically, we're going to be getting in to a theory regarding it's dark and otherwise UNKNOWN history. This particular mirror also happens to be the inspiration behind the outro featured on every video I launch on this channel.

Harry first discovers the Mirror for himself in the Philosopher's Stone:

"It was a magnificent mirror, as high as the ceiling, with an ornate gold frame, standing on two clawed feet. There was an inscription carved around the top: Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi. "

In case you've forgotten how the mirror works, it's essentially a magical mirror that holds the power to show us the 'deepest, most desperate desires' of our hearts. This is reflected in the mirror's name, no pun intended, as 'Erised' flipped around reads as 'desire'. Engraved on the mirror are the words 'Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi, which, backwards, reads as 'I show not your face but your hearts desire'.

According to existing Harry Potter lore all we know is that it existed BEFORE the nineteenth century (pretty open window there) and that no one knows HOW it arrived at Hogwarts. These two aspects of the mirror's existence seem to be entirely undocumented. Moreover, it is entirely ambiguous whether the Mirror of Erised was created with innocent and playful intentions or with more malevolent and darker motives.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing 5 spells from the wizarding world of Harry Potter. But before we get started I want you to brace yourselves to the fact these aren't just any old 5 spells- these are 5 of the most powerful, destructive spells the wizarding world has ever seen- spells so formidable that by contrast even the notorious killing curse (avada kedavra) PALES in comparison.

Now, within the wizarding world magic can be leveraged for a wide variety of functions- from help with every day tasks (like cleaning), to picking locks, to teleportation. But perhaps one of the most IMPORTANT uses of magic in a tumultuous wizarding world (that seems to face a new dark wizard every few decades) is the ability to perform martial magic - that is, magic for combat.-

Now, in every day context martial magic is not necessary, but it certainly never hurts to be prepared for an invasion of death eaters or dark wizard acolytes, and that's probably why most of these 5 powerful spells were created in the first place.

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to-discuss how Voldemort went about killing Severus Snape. Snape's death is a BIG topic in the Harry Potter story, and when he died it was a truly tragic moment in the series. That is unless of course you don't like Snape.

As you progress through the books and films, your perception of Snape is constantly challenged- is he good? Bad? What are his intentions? And in the end, it turned out that Snape was almost more devoted to the cause than anyone.-

Snape later dies in the Deathly Hallows, after Voldemort comes to the conclusion that he will need to kill Snape in order to become the true owner of the elder wand. However, we do also find out later on that Snape died in vain, as he was never the true owner of the elder wand after all - and was simply unnecessarily killed by Voldemort. However, what was always interesting about Voldemort killing Snape was that he didn't do it himself-he used Nagini.

So we know that Snape ultimately dies at the hands, or mouth (rather) of Nagini on Voldemort's orders. But what I found unusual about Snape's death was the very significant ABSENCE of Avada Kedavra AKA the killing curse. Voldemort is a massive proponent of the killing curse, I mean.. he can't get enough of it, and it's very purpose is to kill. So, why wouldn't he use Avada Kedavra on Snape? Instead, he uses Nagini to finish Snape off? Why?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing why Lord Voldemort didn't attack the Longbottom family after the prophecy, which inevitably upended the life of Harry Potter.

As many of you will know, the trajectory of Harry's life was determined before he was even born. For, just weeks before his birth on July 31 in the year of 1980, a somewhat inadequate soothsayer named Sybill Patricia Trelawney provided the wizarding world with a prediction that would forever change the course of history. She gave an authentic prophecy, that would one day go on to become infamous, while meeting with Professor Albus Dumbledore at the Hog's Head Inn. After going into a trance-like state during the meeting, which was actually an informal interview for the Hogwarts' Divination teaching position.-

Based on Trelawney's appointment of the Divination Professor soon-after, it's believed that she made this prophecy in June of 1980�mere weeks before the birth of Harry Potter.-

After Harry's birth, the reasons for Voldemort targeting the Potter family are rather easy to explain. Most obviously, Harry was born on July 31�the end of the seventh month. As for the "born to those who have thrice defied him" bit�that's a bit less obvious. But we do know that Lily and James Potter�Harry's parents�were both asked to join the Death Eaters while at Hogwarts and turned down the invitations. They were also part of the original Order of the Phoenix, which means they would have been part of the missions to fight against Voldemort and his followers. As the war against the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters was ongoing, they most certainly had many opportunities to defy Voldemort repeatedly.-

So, all of this adds up as to why Voldemort targeted the Potter family and believed Harry to be the wizard described in Trelawney's prophecy. BUT the real question is: why didn't he ALSO go after the Longbottoms?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're taking a look at the entire Harry Potter series and discussing the top ten unsung heroes from The Philosopher's Stone to The Deathly Hallows.

In thinking about the novels and films of Harry Potter, it's really not all that difficult to name a few of the bravest characters that grace both the pages and the silver screen. Starting with the title character, of course, Harry Potter�or the Boy Who Lived�is without a doubt the most obvious hero of the franchise. Fans don't have to look very far from there to point out other notable heroes, from Harry's courageous and heroic best mates, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, to the world-famous Professor Albus Dumbledore. And while the headmaster has already well established himself as a hero when Harry arrives at Hogwarts School, the trio of friends also become lauded for their bravery and heroic deeds from their very first year at school. While the recognition of their heroism may go from "sixty points" to Gryffindor "for pure nerve and outstanding courage" in their first year to the gratitude of the entire wizarding world for defeating one of the darkest wizards history has ever know, it's rather inarguable that alongside one of the greatest heroes of all time, Harry, Ron and Hermione are also certainly heroes�all of whom receive the recognition they deserve for their bold and daring feats. But what about all those other characters who helped Dumbledore and the golden trio succeed in those accomplishments? For, as we know, Harry and his friends wouldn't have made it as far as they did in their journey to defeat Voldemort without the help of many allies along the way.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Ghost Plots.

You might not be too surprised to hear that Rowling, who wrote the 7 Harry Potter books in a 10 year timespan, generated a fair bit of information (storylines, plots, characters) that simply never made it in to the final versions of the beloved books. And in time, these secondary pieces of information have come to be known as 'Ghost Plots'.

"Over the seventeen years that I planned and wrote the seven Harry Potter books, I generated a mass of information about the magical world that never appeared in the books. I liked knowing these things (which was fortunate, given that I couldn't stop my imagination spewing it all out) and often, when I needed a throwaway detail, I had it ready because of the background I had developed.

I also found myself developing storylines for secondary (or even tertiary) characters that were superfluous to requirements. More of a wrench were the plots I worked out for some much more important characters that had to be sacrificed for the bigger story. All of these I inwardly termed 'ghost plots', my private expression for all the untold stories that sometimes seemed quite as real to me as the 'final cut'."

But what you may be surprised to hear is that a lot of these deleted plotlines and characters have since been exposed by Rowling. It's been 27 years since the first book came out, so I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

Anyway, today we're going to be taking a closer look at some of these ghost plots, examining the Harry Potter story in a completely new light.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing a few noteworthy instances in which wizarding world magic makes absolutely NO SENSE. As many fans of fantasy fiction will tell you, magic tends to have different rules depending on which universe you're referencing. For example, in some fantasy realms, wizards are called warlocks and witches are called mages. In these universes, those who have magical abilities may or may not require wands. Sometimes, witches and wizards solely rely on the magic they can brew in a cauldron�other times, they ride dragons. But regardless of the differences between each of these fantasy worlds, they all have one thing in common�that is that they all have their own set of rules on how magic exists and operates. In terms of the Harry Potter universe, there are�of course�many rules and stipulations as to how magic works in the wizarding world. But with a universe that has continued to expand over the course of two decades, it's not all that surprising that some of these rules...don't really make much sense at all. And sometimes, there aren't any rules to even reference... In today's video, we'll be going through ten instances of wizarding world magic that truly make no sense at all. Let's begin.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing Veritaserum- an incredibly powerful (and I feel, underutilized) potion that forces individuals to reveal the truth.

"It is Veritaserum � a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear. Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips � right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then, Potter... then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not."

Besides maybe Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and Amortentia- I feel as though Veritaserum AKA 'Truth' Serum is one of the most powerful potions in the entire Wizarding World. And given this fact, I can't help but notice that it's ludicrously underutilized (at least in the series).

In fact, the list of times that it's actually used in the story is exceedingly short. These moments include..

• Giving it to Barty Crouch Jr after discovering that he was disguised as DADA Professor Mad Eye Moody
• Rita Skeeter using it on Bathilda Bagshot while interviewing her for Albus Dumbledore's biography

There were of course other times that it was mentioned, like when Dolores Umbridge used a 'fake potion' made by Snape on Harry Potter that he only pretended to drink.

But on the whole, it's not even talked about that much, and I feel like it could bring about a whole lot of clarity. ESPECIALLY in the context of convicting criminals. In the Death Eater trials, for example, Igor Karkaroff was pardoned by the Wizengamot after giving up the names of some of his co-conspirators. Why not just feed him Truth Serum?

In fact, before we even get 50 pages into that very first novel, we learn�alongside a distraught 11-year-old Harry Potter�that his parents not only died but were MURDERED by one of the most evil and dark wizards of all time. And so, while many of us were indeed taken by surprise when some of our favourite characters were later killed off in the books/films that followed, it really should've been somewhat obvious that we were in for a dark and treacherous ride.-

Which brings us to today's topic�all those deaths. What did they mean? Did they stand for anything? Or were they simply meant to toy with our emotions? Well, in today's video, we'll be discussing these deaths and, in particular, what each of them meant in the larger context of the series.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing ALBUS DUMBLEDORE and a theory about how he always seemed to maintain some level of control.

First things first, Dumbledore is unquestionably one of the most powerful and INTELLIGENT wizards to have ever lived. While at school, Dumbledore's magical abilities consistently turned heads, particularly his skills surrounding charms and transfiguration. He also did exceptionally well on his N.E.W.T.S and O.W.L's. Griselda Marchbanks, a professor working for the Wizarding Examinations Authority, remarked that Albus was able to do things with a wand that 'she had never seen before' - remember that.

He was remarkably wise, cunning, tactical and even emotionally intelligent.-

But while Dumbledore may very well be all of these things, the series sometimes portrayed him to be practically omniscient. So much so, that it's even remarked upon by other characters:

"You are omniscient as ever, Dumbledore." "oh, no, merely friendly with the local barman"

And while this may have been a somewhat playful comment on Dumbledore's behalf, I think that there may actually be some pointers in the story that help to explain Dumbledore's seemingly all-knowing perspective.-

Dumbledore (throughout the books) just seems to give off an overwhelming 'feeling' that he KNOWS what's going on around him at all times.

As a general rule, fans of book series know to watch movie adaptations of the novels they love without expecting too much�for it is extremely rare that a filmmaker's vision will match the fictitious world that a fan has created in their own mind. After all, how could you expect every single person to interpret a book the EXACT same way�from the appearance of the characters to how the world looks around them. And even if there was some sort of consensus on how a character was supposed to look, there's also the fact that it's incredibly unlikely for there to be an actor or actress out there who perfectly resembles that character, is the right age, has the correct dialect, AND can act. Of course, this seems even more impossible when applying the concept to an entire cast of characters�like in Harry Potter.-

And so, when the first movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series, The Philosopher's Stone, was released in 2001, it goes without saying that fans of the books knew things wouldn't be perfect. BUT it wasn't unreasonable to think that the films would at least TRY to accurately reflect the people and places that fans had read on the pages of the first few books. And in many ways, it did�especially, that first film. However, as more and more movies were made, there were some pretty glaring differences between the books and the films�in particular, with some of the main characters of the series.-

The House of Slytherin is representative of one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, a powerful wizard who believed in magical blood purity and argued that only pureblood families should be offered enrollment at the school.

As such, many people associate Slytherins with cruel, dark or simply prejudiced witches or wizards. Unfortunately, this view of Slytherins is further supported by the sheer number of graduates who went on to become entangled with Dark Magic. BUT, it's important to note that that's NOT ALWAYS the case. There are lots of *quote* good witches and wizards who have been former Slytherin students, some of which we'll touch on in today's video.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Tom Marvolo Riddle was born at Wool's Orphanage on New Years eve, 1926 to Merope Gaunt, a pure-blood witch and the daughter of Marvolo Gaunt.-

Tragically, Merope died shortly after Riddle was born, the result of a broken heart. Abandoned by the man that she loved and suffering complications from childbirth paired with starvation and/or hypothermia, Merope no longer had any desire to live, and made no attempts to utilize magic to save her own life.

In interviews conducted AFTER the series ended, JK Rowling opens up the possibility of Voldemort LOVING something, someone. She said it herself, if Merope had survived and been there to raise him, then there's a very good chance that he COULD have loved. This means that he was never quite as emotionally incapable as other canon suggests.

So my question is..If the transformation of Tom Riddle in to Voldemort could have been avoided by some love and care, then what on earth happened to him at the orphanage? I suppose it's possible that he simply needed the love and care of his mother- but, weren't the caregivers at the orphanage good to Tom? Or, was it actually Tom's upbringing that was directly responsible for creating the monster that tore apart the Wizarding World?

The Harry Potter 'prophecy' is a major driving force of the Harry Potter story- foretold by Seer Sybil Trelawney,-the fabled prophecy foresaw the birth of the person who would have the power to defeat Lord Voldemort. And to begin to unpack today's topic further, we need to take a look at the prophecy a little closer.-

In 1980 Sybil Trelawney, the now Hogwarts divination professor, was interviewing for her posting at Hogwarts. During her interview, a disappointed and unimpressed Dumbledore began to lose interest, when suddenly Sybill entered a trance. In her trance, Sybill spoke of a boy, that would be born at the end of July, that possessed the power to defeat the dark lord himself.-

Had no one heard Sybil's prophecy, then there likely wouldn't have been any need to go in to hiding. But unfortunately for the Potters, Snape (who was then a Death Eater) was eavesdropping at the door, and it didn't take long for him to relay this new information to Voldemort. From Snape's perspective, this was his first mistake, but it was also perhaps the catalyst for unforgivable, opportunistic actions on Snape's part that will (potentially) forever change the way you look at his character.

For the most part, Slughorn is regarded as charming, jovial and well-liked among students and staff alike. He had a talent for creating positive and welcoming environments. He was also known for his love of the finer things in life, such as good food and luxurious tastes.

What's more, Slughorn was an excellent professor- showing plenty of enthusiasm and providing practical examples to help students understand complex potion-making techniques.

We later find out that Slughorn had some skeletons in his closet, like giving Tom Riddle information on Horcruxes, but after those memories are extracted he's still not exactly painted as a guilty party. He comes across as a sort of unwilling participant, divulging information on a topic that he couldn't have possibly considered the ramifications of.

But here's my hot take...Slughorn's nature was a lot darker than people realize.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. When we're first introduced to Lucius Malfoy, our initial impressions are that he is a wealthy and pompous supporter of Lord Voldemort. He is portrayed as an arrogant, haughty, and elitist man with a strong sense of superiority. He exhibits a disdain for those he perceives as beneath him, particularly Muggle-borns and anyone who opposes his pure-blood ideology. Fast forward just a few books and Lucius Malfoy no longer displays.. any kind of power or influence. Lucius, who was once confident and haughty, is now portrayed as fearful and desperate- a broken man who has completely lost control of his life.

I wonder- with SOME knowledge of modern technology from the Muggle world, why don't we see the use of more Muggle technology in the wizarding world?

And if Muggle Tech did make an appearance in the Wizarding World, would it be a net NEGATIVE or net POSITIVE?

And is the distinct lack of Muggle Tech a deliberate choice made by the Wizarding community, or are there inherent limitations that prevent the incorporation of such tech?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the fan theory that Rubeus Hagrid was a DEATH EATER.

Since the original release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997, theories based on the wizarding world of Harry Potter have abounded. There are theories out there that Professor Severus Snape was a vampire and that Hermione and Harry were actually siblings. Some of these theories are more popular and widespread than others�such as the idea that Neville Longbottom was actually the Chosen One Professor Trelawney spoke of in her prophecy about the downfall of Lord Voldemort. There are also outlandish speculations that barely deserve any discussion. Today, however, I'll be taking you through a fan theory that has gained some massive traction online�the idea that Rubeus Hagrid was in fact a Death Eater.

The majority of this theory has been presented by a Reddit user by the name of Whoofph, who shared his theory on the sub-Reddit "FanTheories". Upon first learning of this theory, I must admit�I was skeptical. How could the blundering, yet lovable half-giant, who rescued Harry from the Dursleys, secretly be a dark wizard in DIRECT conflict with those he was supposed to be allied with? But after reading it, I must admit, the theory is compelling and filled with some incredibly plausible evidence. It is worth noting, however, that the author of the theory has conceded that much of "the evidence" against Hagrid can likely be chalked up to plot holes, especially earlier on in the series�but it's still fascinating to see how it all fits so well together to support the idea that Hagrid could have actually been a double agent, and follower of Lord Voldemort. As another fan pointed out, the idea that this could be true also provides a really interesting balance to Severus Snape being a double agent for Dumbledore.

In any case, let's take a look at some of the most valid points�at least in my opinion�that support the idea that Hagrid was a Death Eater from this popular fan theory...

Since the release of the first Harry Potter novel in June of 1997, the wizarding world of Harry and his friends has continued to expand. What started off as a relatively small magical community that only focused on the United Kingdom, grew into a global universe and phenomenon with new and exciting narratives being brought to life in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. What was once known as Pottermore�a site where fans could go to learn more about the magical world of Harry Potter�became the Wizarding World and grew to include new franchises like Fantastic Beasts and short stories about things like the founding of North American wizarding school, Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.-

So, while at one point in time, over 25 years ago, it may have been somewhat easy to keep the magical constructs that made up the wizarding world of Harry Potter straight, it has since become increasingly difficult to truly know EVERYTHING about this magical universe. As a result, sometimes even the most devoted fans get details about Harry Potter...well, WRONG. And with fans' certainty that they are correct�answering queries on Reddit and other web forums�it's not surprising that some of these myths about the series have gained lives of their own, and have been circulated around the Internet as fact.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the 10 most HATED characters in the wizarding world. Now, let me preface this list by saying that not all of these people are evil- in fact, some of them aren't evil at all. We must remember that being evil isn't the only prerequisite for being hated- some of these characters are just outright ANNOYING and OBNOXIOUS. Some of them made it on to the list for evil acts, and some of them made it on the list for simply popping their head up where they shouldn't have. I'll also mention that I don't really DISLIKE any of these characters, they all make the Harry Potter story more interesting, and for that I'm thankful for their existence. What kind of successful story is full of neutral characters with neutral opinions? Doesn't sound interesting to-me. I've tried to balance my own opinions with the opinions of the internet, so hopefully I've struck a reasonable balance there. My OWN top 10 list (based purely off of my own opinions) might look a little bit different.

Blood status is one of the most controversial aspects of the wizarding world- a concept in which wizarding families can be distinguished by the level of magically-endowed family members. Generally speaking, people are slotted in to one of the following categories: Pure-blood, half-blood or muggle.

We're introduced to quite a few characters in the Harry Potter story that come from these pure blood lines, and they certainly aren't afraid to remind us of it..Malfoys.... However what we must remember is that at the end of the day, PURE BLOOD status doesn't mean ANYTHING. The most powerful PURE BLOODS are NOT the most powerful wizards- in fact, a top 10 list for the most powerful wizards would only include a couple of the people in this list. The majority of powerful witches and wizards in the wizarding world are actually HALF-BLOODS.

Before we get started I want to mention a couple of things. First of all,I'm going to OMIT the Hogwarts founders and the Peverells as they're sort of OP.-Second of all, I'm going to TRY MY BEST to only include one person from each wizarding family, as otherwise the list could get quite overcrowded with one surname. Thirdly, I want you to pause the video and COMMENT your top 10 list down below before you dive in.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Dumbledore, Voldemort, and the Elder Wand. More specifically- we're going to be discussing a popular fan theory which suggests that Dumbledore was never the TRUE owner of the elder wand.-

The Elder wand was the first hallow created, made by Death himself, and it was said to be the most powerful wand that ever existed. The Elder Wand is made of elder wood, and it's core is the tail hair of a Thestral. It's 15" long and has carvings down its length that resemble clusters of elderberries. With the elder wand, witches and wizards have historically been able to produce intensely powerful magic that others could only dream of. Some magic is actually altogether impossible without the Elder Wand- including things like mending other wands.

We see this powerful artefact pass hands on numerous occasions throughout the Harry Potter story- and its 'ownership' is of utmost importance to the plot. After all, it's the ownership of the Elder Wand that eventually allows Harry to defeat Voldemort- firing his own killing curse right back at him. But before Harry became it's owner in his final showdown with Voldemort at the end of the Deathly Hallows- who were the true owners?

Conventionally it is believed that Dumbledore was the owner, followed by Draco who disarmed Dumbledore, followed by Harry who disarmed Draco. But one popular fan theory suggests that Dumbledore was never the true owner at all. So where does that leave us?

The main driver behind the theory is HOW the wand actually changes ownership. Conventionally it is believed that a witch or wizard can only become the true master of the wand if they 'best' the previous owner. But what does 'best' mean? While it was originally suggested that 'besting' a wizard meant defeating them, the Harry Potter story seemed to suggest later on that 'besting' can include an act as simple as disarming- i.e Draco with Dumbledore. But, is that true?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing Dumbledore, the Potter's, and the fabled Invisibility Cloak. Specifically, we're going to be taking a look at the events of the time period surrounding the Potter's murder, and why on earth Dumbledore chose to 'borrow' an item of such great protection when the Potter family's lives were in imminent danger. If the cloak is so powerful that even death can't find you, wouldn't it be more useful in the hands of people who are hiding from the most powerful dark wizard to have ever lived?

Let's dive in.

The Invisibility Cloak is a powerful magical artefact that once belonged to Ignotus Peverell- the youngest brother from the 'tale of three brothers'- a story outlining the origin of each Deathly Hallow.-

The plot surrounds the three wizard brothers and their ability to cheat death for a short period of time. After conquering death, a personification of death, under the guise of congratulating them, awards them with 3 gifts: The elder wand, the resurrection stone, and the invisibility cloak. Long story short, each brother chose one of the gifts that death had presented them.-Ignotus (the youngest) chose the invisibility cloak.

All 3 of these objects are massively instrumental in the Harry Potter story- and while the elder wand is a huge plot driver, the invisibility cloak definitely ended up being the most useful hallow for Harry- which is interesting, because it was indirectly handed down to him by his father. After James's death, it was kept safe until Harry was old enough to appreciate it, at which point Dumbledore anonymously gifted the cloak to Harry in the Philosopher's Stone.

But..Why did Dumbledore have this Potter family artifact?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing a segment from the Deathly Hallows involving Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter. More specifically, we'll be addressing the moment that Draco Malfoy FAILS to identify Harry Potter in the presence of his father and fellow Death Eaters.

What I want to explore is..WHY? Did Draco simply FAIL to recognize Harry? Was it an act of self-preservation? Or, was this Draco's chance at some form of redemption?

It all begins on chapter 23 of the Deathly Hallows - Malfoy Manor - where there is some confusion around Harry's identity:

"Now, let's see who we've got," said Greyback's gloating voice from overhead, and Harry was rolled over onto his back. A beam of wand light fell onto his face and Greyback laughed.

"I'll be needing butterbeer to wash this one down. What happened to you, ugly?" Harry did not answer immediately.

"I said," repeated Greyback, and Harry received a blow to the diaphragm that made him double over in pain. "what happened to you?"

"Stung." Harry muttered. "Been Stung." "Yeah, looks like it." said a second voice. "What's your name?" snarled Greyback. "Dudley." said Harry.

"And your first name?"

"I -- Vernon. Vernon Dudley."

And why was Harry so unrecognizable? Well, just before being captured by the Snatchers, Hermione, smart-as-always, was able to fire a Stinging Jinx directly into Harry's face. The resulting swelling disfigured his face so much that he was no longer recognizable.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're diving in to a theory addressing the REAL reasoning for Snape's motivation to create his signature dark curse: Sectumsempra.-

While a student at Hogwarts, Severus Snape scribbled all sorts of spells and curses in to his Advanced Potion Making textbook under the moniker the 'Half-Blood Prince'.

And when Harry first takes Slughorn's potions class, he's fortunate enough to find the very same textbook that a young, troubled Snape once jotted pure gold in to.

"This book is the property of the Half Blood Prince"

And Harry ends up using the book for quite some time, as for each and every one of Slughorn's lessons, the book provided easier and clearer instructions that he could follow. The book was like having cheat codes to all of the potions lessons. But the book didn't just contain advice on how to make potions or perfect existing spells, there were also spells written inside that were totally new to Harry...Spells he hadn't heard of before. Because you see, these were spells that Snape had created HIMSELF.-

One such spell was Sectumsempra.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be ranking MY favourite Harry Potter movies from BEST to WORST. I think one point of distinction that needs to be made right away here is that these are NOT reflective of my BOOK rankings.-

Over the course of a decade, the beloved book series was adapted into eight spellbinding films, captivating audiences worldwide and bringing the Wizarding World to life on the big screen. However, In the process of adapting the complex and intricate world of the books into a more visually-driven medium, many aspects of the books were omitted. Because the films are a 'less complete' package, and because of filmmakers' decisions to prioritize certain scenes over others, they make for quite a different experience- each possessing their own unique charms and quirks. The best way to describe the films would be a 'diluted' version of the books. HOWEVER, with that said, I'm still a HUGE fan of the Harry Potter films (yes all of them), and I have many positive comments about the way that each film was constructed. As we dive into this cinematic realm, we'll explore the highs and lows of each movie, taking into account the storytelling, visual effects, and the ways in which they either stayed true to or deviated from the original source material.

I'll try my best to rationalize WHY I ranked them the way that I did, but forgive me if in some instances I'm unable to articulate myself properly and limited to explaining things with just a 'feeling'. I know that a LOT of you are going to deviate from my choices here, so before we get started be sure to comment YOUR best to worst in the comment section down below.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be discussing a rather compelling theory pertaining to the Defence Against the Dark Arts posting at Hogwarts school. I first saw this theory on Reddit, so shout out to 'Wordhammer' on the HP subreddit for the inspiration.

Defence Against the Dark Arts is a CORE subject taught at Hogwarts that (purportedly) teaches students how to defend themselves against dark magic, creatures and curses- though I'm not sure this subject has been particularly successful in this regard.-

The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including recognizing and repelling dark creatures, identifying and countering curses, and learning protective spells.-

But for as long as Harry attended Hogwarts (and actually, for many decades prior) the subject had a particularly high turnover rate. Scratch that..a LUDICROUSLY high turnover rate. Every single year that Harry attended Hogwarts he had a completely different professor that taught the subject in an entirely different way.-

As you can imagine, this was pretty disruptive to the learning process.-

And WHO could be responsible for such a mess? Why, Lord Voldemort of course.-

This is explained to Harry by Dumbledore:

"Oh, he definitely wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts job," said Dumbledore. "The aftermath of our little meeting proved that. You see, we have never been able to keep a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for longer than a year since I refused the post to Lord Voldemort."

And it all dates back to young Tom Riddle's graduation from Hogwarts.-

Shortly after completing his studies, Tom Riddle expressed his desire to become the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor at his alma mater- partially driven by his love for the school, and partially by his fascination with the Dark Arts. And he didn't waste any time, quickly submitting an application to (then) headmaster Armando Dippet. After some time Dippet ended up refusing Riddle's application, citing his age, but did encourage him to re-apply in the future if he was still interested.-

More than two decades later, Riddle emerged as the enigmatic and notorious Lord Voldemort. Seeking an opportunity to return to Hogwarts, Voldemort once again pursued the coveted Defence Against the Dark Arts position. However, this time, Albus Dumbledore had assumed the role of Headmaster. Recognizing Voldemort's dark intentions, Dumbledore staunchly rejected his application. Despite Voldemort's ulterior motives of using the application as a pretext to conduct research on dark magic, recruit followers, and conceal one of his Horcruxes, he was enraged by the denial of his return to the school.-After his denial, Voldemort sought vengeance by jinxing the position, ensuring that from that point onward no one could maintain the Defence Against the Dark Arts post for more than one year.

And as far as conventional understanding of the Harry Potter story goes- everyone has always accepted this fact at face value. No one can hold the position for more than a year, and that's about all there is to it. There's no explanation for WHY 1 year or HOW 1 year is actually..Enforced. Which makes me wonder, how is it that this Jinx actually WORKS? We know the outcome but have very little information on the process.

Today I want to discuss a compelling theory which adds a layer of depth to Voldemort's nefarious Jinx- perhaps suggesting that the Jinx is far more sinister than meets the eye.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing MAGIC and whether or not this powerful force of nature can ever be STRIPPED away from those who wield it. In the world of Harry Potter where magic is omnipresent and omnipotent, I can't help but wonder-

whether the extraordinary abilities possessed by witches and wizards can ever be lost.-

Typically, witches and wizards (who are destined to wield magic) begin exhibiting signs of magical ability in childhood. Though within this timeframe there is considerable variety.-

For instance, individuals such as Professor McGonagall exhibited clear indications of magic from an early age. In her earliest moments, she demonstrated remarkable abilities- playing her father's bagpipes, summoning toys to her crib, and even exerting control over the household cat. Similarly, Ariana Dumbledore showcased her magical prowess during her early childhood.-

Conversely, individuals like Neville Longbottom took a longer time to manifest their magical abilities. Although he, too, exhibited magic in his earliest hours by discreetly manipulating his blanket for added security, this subtle act went unnoticed. Neville did not demonstrate magic again until a more pressing situation forced it out of him. It occurred when he was dropped from a height and fortuitously bounced, resulting in his rescue from a potentially dreadful fall.

Overall, however, it's agreed that magic is displayed (at a MINIMUM) by the time the witch or wizard reaches eleven years old, otherwise known as Hogwarts age.

But I wonder...Can magic be stripped away just as quickly as it manifests? Can one who finds themselves accustomed to their magical capabilities be then reduced to what is effectively a..Squib?

Today we're going to discuss witches and wizards losing magic in Harry Potter. We will also touch upon instances of losing magic in other fictional works, such as the concept of severing in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time or the magic loss depicted in Lev Grossman's The Magicians. Hopefully, by drawing comparisons to these fictional universes, we can shed light on whether similar occurrences exist in J.K. Rowling's own creation.

Besides maybe Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and Amortentia- I feel as though Veritaserum AKA 'Truth' Serum is one of the most powerful potions in the entire Wizarding World. And given this fact, I can't help but notice that it's ludicrously underutilized (at least in the series).

In fact, the list of times that it's actually used in the story is exceedingly short. These moments include..

Giving it to Barty Crouch Jr after discovering that he was disguised as DADA Professor Mad Eye Moody

AND

Rita Skeeter using it on Bathilda Bagshot while interviewing her for Albus Dumbledore's biography

There were of course other times that it was mentioned, like when Dolores Umbridge used a 'fake potion' made by Snape on Harry Potter that he only pretended to drink.

But on the whole, it's not even talked about that much, and I feel like it could bring about a whole lot of clarity. ESPECIALLY in the context of convicting criminals. In the Death Eater trials, for example, Igor Karkaroff was pardoned by the Wizengamot after giving up the names of some of his co-conspirators. Why not just feed him Truth Serum?

In today's video we'll be discussing WHY Veritaserum isn't more actively used by the Ministry of Magic. We'll also be discussing use-cases from the story in which Veritaserum could have proven to be extremely useful, potentially saving lives in the process.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing Severus Snape, Lord Voldemort- and the massive question of Why on earth Snape didn’t do MORE to stagnate Voldemort’s resurgence. As the series unfolds, Snape's loyalties and motivations become a subject of intense speculation and debate among fans. Because you see, throughout the series Snape occupies a unique position, situated at the crossroads of light and darkness. Initially portrayed as a villain, his true allegiance is later revealed. However, upon this big reveal I couldn’t help but also ask- why didn’t he capitalize on an opportunity to eliminate Voldemort sooner? Snape had fooled everyone, even the Legilimens Lord Voldemort, which put him in a better position to assassinate Voldemort than anyone.

Sure, Voldemort’s Horcruxes would have kept him ‘alive’- but he would have been once again reduced to a non-corporeal form, reliant on others (like Nagini and Pettigrew) to help him return to a physical form. Another aspect to consider is that the more time Voldemort is reduced to a non-corporeal form, the more time there is to find and destroy the rest of his Horcruxes. In this scenario, it’s entirely possible that by the time Voldemort is ‘back’ he has no more Horcruxes to fall back on.

By killing Voldemort Snape could have effectively put Voldemort’s resurgence to a halt and potentially saved countless lives in the process. And all it would have taken is one ‘surprise’ Avada Kedavra.

So, was it unwillingness? Fear? Snape’s devotion to a grander plan? Or something else altogether.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the history of the magical sporting event known far and wide around the wizarding world as QUIDDITCH.

Quidditch is without a doubt, the most popular and well-known sport played by witches and wizards in the entirety of the wizarding world. It is, as you may have guessed or probably already know, extremely magical in nature�as the whole game revolves around various balls that fly about of their own volition and is played while riding around on broomsticks.-

With two opposing teams of seven, Quidditch is played on a pitch typically set up on a deserted moor or field, far from the view of us Muggles. And just as with many of our non-magical team sports, there are different positions on each team. These positions are known as the Chasers, of which there are three, the Beaters, of which there are two, a single Keeper, and a Seeker. Quidditch is also played using four different balls�an entirely seamless red leather Quaffle, 12 inches in size and used to score points on opposing teams' goals, two 10-inch iron Bludgers, which only serve to knock players off their broomsticks and their game, and a Golden Snitch�a small golden ball with silver, rotational wings. Both teams then have three goalposts, raised high in the air with a large hoop at the top of each. It's the Chasers' job to use the Quaffle to score on the opposing team's goals. Each successful shot through one of these hoop goals is worth 10 points. Goalposts are guarded by a team's Keeper�similar to that of a Muggle sports team's goalie. The Beaters' primary responsibility is to hit�or "beat"�the Bludgers away from their teammates in order to allow them to score points uninterrupted, without being knocked off their broomsticks. And then there's the Seeker, who basically plays a game all on their own, with their one and only goal being to find and catch the Golden Snitch before the other team's Seeker. Doing so earns the Seeker's team 150 points and signifies the end of the match.-

Of course, as with any sport, Quidditch hasn't always been played this way. It has evolved over the centuries, and has a rich and rather colourful past. In fact, we are fortunate enough to have an incredibly robust account of Quidditch's history thanks to Quidditch Through the Ages, a text by the wizard Kennilworthy Whisp. Throughout the remainder of today's video, the information that I'll be sharing is based on Kennilworthy's tremendous research and body of work, all of which focused on the evolution and history of this incredible sport.

Coming to you with some really sad news today. RIP Michael Gambon AKA Dumbledore.

Earlier on I read that Michael Gambon, who famously played Albus Dumbledore for the majority of the Harry Potter films,-has passed away at the age of 82.

"We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon," said the statement issued on behalf of his wife, Anne, and son Fergus by publicist Clair Dobbs.

It added that he "died peacefully in hospital" after a bout of pneumonia with the pair at his bedside.

His family also added:

"We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love,"-

For those unaware, Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore after the death of Richard Harris, who portrayed the wise old wizard in the Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

And take over the role he certainly did- and while the two men may have portrayed Dumbledore in their own unique ways, both were incredibly effective. Leaving their mark on the Harry Potter franchise for all of eternity.

Born on October 19, 1940, in Dublin, Ireland, Michael Gambon showed an early inclination towards the arts. He left school at the age of 15 and went on to become a successful engineer. However, the allure of the theater proved irresistible, and Gambon soon embarked on a professional acting career. He joined the prestigious National Theatre in London's Old Vic as one of its founding members in 1962. Collaborating with legendary figures like Laurence Olivier, Derek Jacobi, and Maggie Smith, Gambon developed his craft and gained prominence on the stage.

Throughout his illustrious career, Gambon amassed numerous awards and honors. He received three Olivier Awards and two Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for his remarkable stage performances. On the screen, Gambon was honored with four British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Additionally, he won two ensemble cast Screen Actors Guild Awards for his roles in "Gosford Park" and "The King's Speech." In 1998, Gambon was knighted for his immense contributions to the world of drama.

But it wasn't just contributions to the world of Drama that Gambon deserved to be knighted for. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that Gambon played an integral part of so many people's childhoods- bringing the iconic role of Dumbledore to life.

It's tough getting older and seeing our childhood heroes passing away, but just like Hagrid and Robbie Coltrane- Gambon's contributions to the world of theatre will live forever.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're going to be taking a deep dive into what COULD have happened to the Wizarding World and the lives of the witches and wizards we now know so well IF Gellert Grindelwald had been the winner of his infamous duel with Albus Dumbledore.

As many of you will know, in 1945, Albus Dumbledore at long last challenged the dark wizard Grindelwald, defeating him in a duel, which ended Grindelwald's reign of terror over the Wizarding community and put a stop to his frightful rise to power. This duel, of course, came decades after the two men had formed an intense bond in their youth. In fact, according to Dumbledore's own admission, Albus was in fact in love with Gellert as a young man. Their relationship was initially built upon a foundation of shared hatred towards Muggle-kind, and they dreamed of a world in which witches and wizards would conquer the non-magical world and make them into a subservient people.-

Fortunately, for the greater magical community at large, Albus Dumbledore's reverie of this dystopian version of the world was obliterated when his younger sister, Ariana, was killed in a misguided argument between himself, Gellert, and Aberforth, Albus' younger brother, turned fatal. After this tragic incident, the two young wizards parted ways, as their ideologies began to diverge drastically.

Many years later, Gellert began his infamous rise to power in pursuit of making the world he'd once envisioned alongside Dumbledore a reality. It's at this point in their shared history, that we discovered that Grindelwald and Albus had made an unbreakable vow with one another never to oppose the other. This was done at a time when they both believed they wanted the same thing: domination over the human race. Unfortunately, this vow prevented Dumbledore from putting a stop to all the evil things Grindelwald did for decades.

BUT, as I mentioned at the start of this video, there eventually came a time in which Albus was able to overcome the vow, challenge Grindelwald, and ultimately defeat and imprison him. The question I raise with you now is: What would have happened if Albus Dumbledore had NOT won this fight? What would the Wizarding World have looked like if the winner had, in fact, been Gellert Grindelwald instead?
