What Does Jeremiah 29:11 Really Mean? (Jeremiah 29:4-14) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study
Om avsnittet
Today in Bible Study 101 we zoom out to the big storyline of Scripture and see why knowing where a passage sits changes how we read it. Then we look at Jeremiah 29:11, the verse on so many mugs and graduation cards, and what it meant to exiles who had just learned they would be in Babylon for seventy years. The real promise is that God had not left them, and it is much sturdier than the coffee mug version.
"For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11)
Questions this episode answers
What is the big story of the Bible?
God creates everything good, humanity breaks it through sin, and God sets a rescue plan in motion through Abraham, Israel, and King David. After exile and centuries of waiting, Jesus comes, dies, and rises. The church now lives in the promise that God will finish what He started.
What does Jeremiah 29:11 really mean?
Jeremiah wrote to people already exiled in Babylon and told them to settle in, because the exile would last seventy years. The promise of a future and a hope came right after that hard news. It was not a promise of quick relief, but a promise that God had not abandoned them.
How can I find the context of a Bible verse?
Start with the introduction page for each book in your Bible, which usually covers the author, time frame, and situation. Notice chapter headings and dates. If a verse is printed everywhere, go read the whole chapter around it.
