Why Does God Prune Us? (John 15:1-11) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

In this episode we look at Jesus' picture of the vine and the branches in John 15. I share what I have learned from pruning grapevines to show how God carefully removes what keeps us from growing. Staying connected to Jesus is what produces lasting fruit and joy, even when pruning feels uncomfortable.

"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

What does it mean to abide in Christ?

To abide means to remain or stay connected. In John 15, Jesus says we can't bear fruit apart from Him. Abiding is a daily relationship of trusting, listening, and obeying.

Why does God prune us?

John 15:2 says the Father prunes every branch that bears fruit so it will bear more fruit. Pruning can feel painful, but it removes what hinders our growth. It is a sign of His care, not His rejection.

What fruit is Jesus talking about in John 15?

Fruit is what grows from a life connected to Jesus, including love, joy, obedience, and prayers that bring glory to God. It grows naturally as we stay close to Him over a lifetime.
