How Did Psalm 22 Predict the Crucifixion of Jesus? (Psalm 22:16-18) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

Today we continue in Psalm 22, a psalm that reveals very specific details about Jesus' death. Some of these details are easy to miss if you are not careful. We look at how the Psalms pointed to what would happen to Jesus long before He was born.

"They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots." (Psalm 22:18)

Questions this episode answers

What details in Psalm 22 match the crucifixion?

Psalm 22 describes a mocking crowd (Psalm 22:7-8), pierced hands and feet (Psalm 22:16), and garments divided by casting lots (Psalm 22:18). The Gospels record these at the cross (Matthew 27:35, 27:39-43).

When was Psalm 22 written?

Psalm 22 is a psalm of David, who lived about a thousand years before Jesus. That makes its detailed picture of the cross even more striking.

Why does fulfilled prophecy matter?

It shows God's plan of salvation was never an afterthought. It gives us confidence that Jesus is the Messiah and that God keeps His word.
