How Do I Respond When I Want to Run Away? (Psalm 57) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

In many of the Psalms, David is running from Saul, who wants to kill him. Our situations may not be that intense, but we all know what it feels like to run from something. Today Psalm 57 gives us a picture of how to respond to God in those moments.

"Be exalted above the heavens, O God; let Your glory be above all the earth." (Psalm 57:5)

Questions this episode answers

What was happening when David wrote Psalm 57?

The heading says David wrote Psalm 57 when he fled from Saul into the cave. He was hiding for his life, yet he wrote a song of trust and praise. It shows that worship can rise even from a dark place.

What does it mean to take refuge in the shadow of God's wings?

In Psalm 57:1, David says he will take refuge in the shadow of God's wings until destruction passes by. The picture is of a bird sheltering its young. It means we can hide in God's care until the storm is over.

How can I praise God when I'm afraid?

David says, 'My heart is steadfast,' before his circumstances change. Praise turns our eyes from the danger to God's glory and love. It doesn't deny the problem, but it puts God in His rightful place above it.
