Why Did Jesus Wash His Disciples' Feet? (John 13:1-17) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

Today we look at John 13:1-17, where Jesus kneels down and washes His disciples' feet. We talk about what that act meant in its culture, how leadership in God's kingdom looks different from the world's, and why serving in hidden places still matters. It is a practical invitation to ask, am I serving in a way that reflects Him?

"If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." (John 13:14)

Questions this episode answers

Why did Jesus wash the disciples' feet?

Foot washing was a job for the lowest servant, yet Jesus did it Himself. He was modeling the humble love He wanted His followers to show each other (John 13:15). It also pointed to the deeper cleansing He gives through the cross.

What does servant leadership mean for Christians?

In God's kingdom, greatness is measured by service, not status. Jesus, the Lord and Teacher, took the lowest place. Our influence grows as we serve others with humility.

Does serving matter when no one notices?

Yes. Much of Jesus' example happened in a quiet room with a small group. God sees hidden faithfulness, and Jesus promised that those who live this out will be blessed (John 13:17).
